Samskaras kick this E.P. off with a track like “Fuelscape” and at first, it sounds like a typical modern death metal act.  Its dark and heavy, I can’t put my finger on it but the vocals have a few different styles to them.  And I am not 100% sure that Eric is handling all vocals duties.  But the vocals from “Fuelscape” don’t sound exactly like them on the track “Separate”. They really grab your attention around the 1:20 mark of “Fuelscape” when you hear the line “see how easy it is, to destroy a planet.” The song takes on a ferocious and dark turn, the blast beats consume you and that riff hooks you. The accents on the bell of the ride during the blast beats adds some spice to it. But then they come out and have clean vocals layered and they sound like something you would get from BTBAM.  Not clean vocals in the sense that they are trying to get on the bandwagon of clean vocals.  But they aren’t growling, and they aren’t bad either. I like them.  I really dig “Fuelscape” so I was eager to hear more off this E.P. Solar begins like a song you would get from Animals as leaders, more melodic  for at least the first thirty seconds and then they get ready to crush you again in short time.  If you have never heard of Alexandre Dupras before, or heard him play. Well than this E.P. should be enough to get you familiarized with him.  The drums are on point for the entire E.P. they just mesh with the guitar tones well.  These two guys have a lot of talent. But having them together on this project, they are a force to be reckoned with. I have to admit the vocals on “Separate” had me thinking a few times that the vocals sound just like D. Randall Blythe from Lamb Of God, while the rest of the music going on is so much darker and heavier. Check it out on “Separate” when you get to the 1:10 mark there are similarities. But it’s the 1:43 mark that I really get this vibe.  They have a really great balance of melodic to technical guitar work. Alexander’s drums are superb they sound awesome and he has gotten my attention for his talents. I know this is a 4 track E.P. but it comes with a “Name Your Price” option. The production is great, the music is awesome, and some of those riffs just get you instantly hooked and ready to throw some fists. it is worth mentioning that this E.P. was mixed and mastered by Chris Donaldson from The Grid so you know it sounds great.There is virtually no fluff as far as I am concerned, the clean vocals have a purpose and it’s not to show off their soothing voices.  So don’t get hung up on the clean vocals until you hear them for yourself.  I’ve been listening to this E.P. a lot personally and I dig it 7.5/10 \m/

Parius are at it again this time with a brilliant four track E.P. featuring Ryan Knight of Black Dahlia Murder fame, and Michael Keene from The Faceless. So without getting too carried away from those guest spots let’s check this E.P. out.  First off this E.P. drops today so it’s available on Parius’s Bandcamp page .

 

 

  • Let There Be Light (Feat. Ryan Knight)

The song begins with a slow melodic acoustic guitar melody being played alongside a violin played by Michaela Nachtigall. They rock that melodic introduction for just shy of forty seconds before they come in fast and hard. Now I want to point one thing out that they didn’t have on their last album. And that comes around the 1:20 mark in the form of mildly clean vocals.  I mean they aren’t your normal caliber of clean vocals, they are layered and it sounds like are more than just Louis doing vocals at this point. I actually like them, it’s not like they are trying to get the points for clean vocals here.  They aren’t trying to sound like All That Remains with Phil’s over the top use of clean vocals. No they are orchestrated in a way that gives the song another element altogether. Not to mention they do it again a few times throughout the song and I can’t shake the fact that I really enjoy those clean sections.  I am digging the drums on this track, and let’s not forget the solo at the 3:07 mark that is a short and sweet shredding solo that fits the Ryan Knight format.  If this is how they kick off the E.P. with a solid track like this one. Than I am eager to listen to the rest.

 

  • A Shade Darker Than Black

A quick 1.2.3.4 and then some growling vocals kick this song off, while the vocals are being carried out the guitars are ripping it up the riffs with ferocity.  It’s like they took the intensity level of the previous track, and then decided they were going to make something heavier. Because this track has gone to a darker area of bar raising. I’m a big fan on Louis’s vocals, there is literally no weak point in them. For all his ranges it’s like he gives it to you 100% all or nothing, and I find his vocal style to be quite enjoyable. The guitar work on this song is impressive, but then again so are the drums. I know they parted ways with Ian, so I am not sure if he is who plays on this E.P. whether one of the guys played, or the drums are programmed its hard to tell, but at any rate the drums sound awesome.

 

  • A Somber Dream

I am really digging how this song starts off with a piano playing, a melody, and  just that piano opener is catchy,  but then when the drums join in so does the bass. This is a very visual interlude and fits the title perfectly. This is more or less a nice instrumental track that ties things together before the final song seals the fate of this killer E.P.

 

  • Another Kind Of Reckoning ( Feat Michael Keene)

I’m not going to tell you how this song is, because I really want you to check this band out and have a listen for yourself. It’s only a four track E.P. and the sound is all there. It doesn’t sound like something that was recorded in a warehouse basement, no this is the product of a group putting everything they could into self-releasing an E.P. just over a year after releasing their debut full length. I remembered hearing their debut album Saturnine and wondering why I hadn’t heard these guys before, and wondering if they would be touring. But the fact is they have been self-promoting and self-releasing everything they have been doing. Which many bands do also, but to get a sound like this, in just over a year, really only 14 months to putting out an E.P. with a few guest spots and sounds so professional. It leads me to believe that this group of guys here are really ready to be making a name for themselves. They are ready to show the world who they are and what they are all about. Picking up this E.P. would be in your best interest because I have a great reason to believe they could be putting out another or at least more music this year. Yup that’s right Parius didn’t record this and decide to take time off.  They are already back at the grindstone getting music written and moving forward to deliver another E.P. in the near future. now I don’t have anything more to tell you on an if and when, but I know they really enjoyed putting this E.P. together and have the drive to make some killer metal invade our airwaves sooner than later. I am very pleased with this E.P. they have a unique style and sound. They deliver some intense technical melodic death metal with ease.  I really enjoy this E.P.  And was surprised to see Ryan Knight and Michael Keene involved in this E.P. I think it goes to show I am not the only one who finds them to be a band worth investing some time in to.  Check out Let There Be Light 8/10 \m/

The album begins with the track titled Cthulhu’s Calling which is an ominous introductory track really playing towards the dark and intriguing nature of this band. Now I have never heard these guys before, but I gotta admit, the moment those guitars kick in for the second track titled “Lies” I was hooked. Those guitars sound mean.  It reminds me of old Morbid Angel, it’s got me mean mugging while I’m head banging here. They have a solid minute and a half of spine splitting guitar riffs before the vocals join in. The ferocity of the sound is impressive, they walk the line of technical death metal. Is it too early to say that Lies is my favorite track? Holy shit that song blew me away. But they follow that up with an absolutely crushing track like Seed of Hatred. Now I usually will focus a lot on the drums, however I really want to point out the guitar tones. Riccardo and Fabio’s guitars just sound nasty, when thinking about a death metal sound. These guitars deliver the death blow by blow and throw in those classic old school pinch squeals. I dig the guitar solo on “Multiple Eyes” that song really leaves you wanting more. One thing that I really enjoy about the music on this album, is that for every track there is a solid set up between the guitars and the drums. They have really grabbed your attention within the first minute of every song and managed to get the listener hooked rather easily. The sound quality is great, and I dig that artwork. Looking for some new school death metal with a bit of old school influence and technical riffs and blistering drums. Then you will want to check out Soul Demise by Maze of Sothoth. 7/10 \m/

Acranius – Reign Of Terror- Album review 7/10 \m/

Reign of Terror starts out with a solid introductory track beginning with radio transmissions growing in volume and fading in,  then the drums and guitar kick things off musically to break this song out of its package. And also to give the listeners a simple two minute acclimation period to get adjusted to the brutal slamming death garnished with a dose of groove.  They follow up  that with Kingmaker This song starts out with the drums getting started with a ten second set up and then the song takes on the personality of an armored tank. It’s a low and slow style song, with a killer groove on the guitars for the verses.I must admit that I was not expecting so much groove from these guys. I mean listening to Outlaw it has this virulent edge about it. And it’s not just the rhythm or the chorus. I mean everything about this song is magnetic.  The drums are perfect, there is literally nothing more the drums needed to do, to accomplish something this satisfactory.  I mean quite frankly I just really dig Rob’s drum style. The sound of the drums is great, snare does not have a ping to it.  And it doesn’t seem like he puts too much thought into things like gravity blasts. In fact it seems like he wants the listener to be able to follow with the beat, but he pulls off some great sounding fills. For example the very beginning of Warpath is such a killer yet simple set up.  Alternating snare bass drum and the tom, and then rolling the bass with the rest of the fill and when you hear it, it is in fact a simple enough fill. But it’s the sound of the drums themselves, the tempo, and really the confidence Ron projects from his drumsticks. Speaking of Warpath let’s talk about that section right around the one minute mark. You know what I am talking about when you listen to the track. It’s going to hook you right away but if it doesn’t then the solo snare pop at the 1:20 mark followed by the drum fill and heavy dose of double bass is going to get you going. But the song hits that breakdown at 1:55 and that’s when shit has hit the fan in the pit. There is no way you can listen to this song without wanting to throw some haymakers. I just don’t see how it is possible after I have listened to it myself.  But they follow up with Battle Scars and holy shit does it have this solid thirty seconds of menacing brutal introduction.  Vocals come in only seconds after that killer intro. It’s a bit of a slower song coming in at around 120BPM but they seem to have this ability to get the listener hooked every song regardless of tempo, blasts, anything like that.  After spinning this album for a bit, I have come to really enjoy their sound. They have no gimmicks, they have no need to sound like anyone else. They don’t live by anyone’s rules, they just play a really catchy form of slamming death metal. Lastly they seal the deal on this album by ending with tracks like “The Executioner” (holy shit what a punishing track it is too), and “Died a Liar” They came to fuck shit up, it’s apparent that what they set out to accomplish was to make some slamming death that’s going to get you hooked and to detonate the pit when they play.  I really enjoy this album,  I was not expecting this album to have so many killer hooks it really is a rock solid album. 7/10\m/ go on an have a listen for yourself to the track Kingmaker

Today the Devil has brought us a jazzed up blast filled tech death gem. The band responsible for this killer 3 track E.P. is Canada’s own Brought by Pain. They dropped this killer e.p. earlier this month. With one  hell of a line up this was something we wanted to get our mitts on. Starting with the first track titled “Ending”  the very way it begins with Kevin and Olivier with the guitars playing a killer opening riff, and than Hugo’s bass is nothing short of magical. By the time Samuel unleashes his vocal barrage we were already hooked and that only took about 30 seconds or so. Guyot is a machine behind the kit so it was of no surprise that this was going to be impressive. They open with a very catchy track, with surgically precise transitions and end the E.P. with just under five minutes of some infectious technical brutality with the track “Broadcast” This is the perfect little E.P. to get you interested in this group of musicians. It sure as shit has us ready to hear more stuff by them. Not to mention that if any of you guys are looking for a last minute gift for a metal head, this three track e.p. is only USD $3 and packs a big punch. Sound quality is great, and the line up is truly impressive. While it may only be three tracks each track is rock solid. Whatever holiday you may be celebrating today, if you are looking for something to listen to, check out the Crafted By Society E.P. Everything about this is impressive. 8/10\m/

Today the devil has brought us “deformity, the sophomore album by New Jersey’s slamming death act Cognitive.  The album begins with a solid introductory track, filled with gruesome riffs, a hearty helping of blast beats, and samples to set the scene. By the time you get to the second track off this stellar album, you may have already decided that you were intrigued and ready to listen to what these guys are going to pull off. Well Birthing The Deformity is a cool track t follow up Awakening The Miscreation. Haunted justice is a solid track, but possibly my favorite track comes in fourth on the track list.  And that is Beneath The Floorboards. I really dig this track as it has gotten the most plays out of the album. But the album as a whole is fucking awesome. When we got our hands on this it was a great day because this album right here has gotten a lot of rotations by us. I’m am very pleased by this album, as it is meticulously catchy rhythms and the technicality for precise transitions between some killer riffs. I really dig this album and you know it is a great follow up to their 2014 self-titled album. While their self-titled album had a small melodic element about it, Deformity does not possess that characteristic, but is much heavier.  They really seal the deal by ending the album with a punishing track like Merciless Forest that solo at the end does it for me. This track rips. This album rips, and it’s why we have been enjoying it so much, enough to earn this one a 9/10 \m/

Today the devil has dropped something strangely interesting and dark.  It’s the first full length album by Italian noise makers Noise Trail Immersion. I feel as though their name should have included “Therapy” on the end because that’s what this album is like, a caustic  yet effective form of music, that to some could cause epileptic seizures and others like myself find a lot of peace within the music.  They are a really unique band with elements of blackened metal, mathcore, and extreme metal mixed together to create a blunt and chaotic sound that is actually very appealing. Yet melodic in some areas.  It’s a sound that you have to hear to understand, but from listening to this album every little element from the mathcore, to the blackened metal, I mean it all stands out.  they go from one end of the spectrum where they are playing a really smooth melodic riff, to going into some dissonance and poly-rhythms.  All in a matter of seconds and no warnings either and with fierce delivery. You still get plenty of catchy riffs and moments in tracks like Organism. its not all dissonant, dark, noise.  They have a rhyme and a reason, and you will have to go into this album knowing that you are going to  have a lot of unexpected sounds and things happening all at once and from different angles. If you are looking for something different,  something dark and chaotic.  or maybe you are looking for something that walks the balance between dissonance and catchy rhythms look no further. Noise Trail Immersion is the everyday carry utility tool consisting of many different elements and giving you the hardcore fuck you attitude as they deliver their brand through your speakers. I have really enjoyed listening to this and being surprised at what they pull off with their music. 7/10 \m/

Today the Devil has delivered a really strong progressive experimental death metal album by the unique title On The Eve Of A Goodbye, by The Reticent. This album right here came out and almost flew under my radar but I found something really haunting about the artwork and I knew I was indeed going to check this album out. I am glad I did, this is one of my favorite albums of 2016. Now I know I may not cover a lot of progressive metal bands. But this is an album that deserves a lot of credit. The song writing is on an apparent emotional level that seems to connect at nerves deep inside your conscience. The story behind this album is that the main songwriter Chris Hathcock lost a beloved friend to suicide and complied all of his memories and emotions into the music. This is certainly going to have clean vocals but this will be a solid album to check out for fans of Opeth from really any album era, and other bands like Porcupine Tree, and a few others. Every song on this album has some type of emotional connection and is Chris way of projecting what this tragic experience was like.  Songs that are highly recommended to check out are;

The Comprehension, The Confrontation, The Apology, and then one truly powerful song titled “Funeral For a Firefly” in which the song was recorded in entirely one take. During the song you can hear Chris as he begins to weep over the loss of Eve. I don’t know how many people out there have the determination and conviction to go through what Chris had to go through in order to write an album like this. It took Chris about ten years to go through and take everything that he had gone through to make this album.  This album is one of the best I have in a long time. I wasn’t going to pass up on this one and you shouldn’t either. This brilliant album is 100% deserving of a 10/10 \m/ from the idea and concept to the songwriting and the sound quality. Chris created something beautiful and heavy as fuck at the same time. This really is an album you need to listen to it from start to finish to get the full effect. and trust us when we say it is worth it.

Today the Devil has brought us a a dark and primitive extreme  black metal self titled album by the German metal trio Ctulu. This album is filled to the brim with catchy riffs, drivng rhtyms, dark lyrics, and blistering blast beats. some fucking killer blackened metal! This album surprised the shit out of me. I really dig the album art too, its dark and cult like. its like a page from some H.P. Lovecraft tale.  Track after track they really impressed me, the first song was a bit on the slower and darker paced side of things. But it sets up a lot of imagery within the music. I mean the more I listen to it, the more I wonder why I haven’t heard this group before.  However the second track follows up with faster pace and and fucking bad ass beginning. The guitars and drums really set up this song and it’s a fucking catchy track right from when the vocals begin. The third track begins to compete with the previous track in speed and contagious choruses and vocals in general. The guitars are a a driving force, even with how straightforward the riffs may be. This level of blackened hasn’t been on my radar for a while.  The album has only two dark and slow tracks and those being Serce krwawe and Rozgoryczona, rozczarowana, a gotowa na wszystko.  The rest are all a fast paced, with the guitar really grasping out you while the drums are so precise and blistering fast. This is what I love about finding a band I haven’t heard before. When it has a “WOW” factor and really impresses you. This gem came out just about a month ago and has been getting a lot of play these past few weeks. Our top played tracks are Totenhauswinde which means death house winds. And yea the song is about as badass as its name is. Von Mondeswächtern und Menschverächtern is also a killer track. This album is 100% worth being check out and luckily for you its on bandcamp so check it out below. For some really dark, and driving blackened extreme death metal that will certainly impress many of you. 7/10 \m/

Today the Devil has brought us some intergalactic Death-Groove from Boston, we are listening to The Arrival by The Beast Of Nod. Five killer truly killer tracks.

 

  • The Beast Awakens

This is a groove filled introductory track. It is strictly instrumental in style and really sets this album up by giving you a taste of what their style is. They are not a straight up death metal band, they incorporate tech death, death metal and groove metal into their sound, as well as incorporating SCI-FI elements into the music.

  • Cephalopod Of Doom

This song starts out with a cool introduction and takes very little time getting into the swing of things with a groove heavy rhythm, and then when Paul’s vocals hit the death elements start to become more obvious. They have a very unique style that is all their own really, sure some bands are doing a Sci-Fi theme with their music. That’s not a new concept, but the way this five piece outfit pulls it off is just cool. You can’t listen to this E.P. and not move to it, head bang, tap your foot whatever it may be. The force is strong with this band and the groove is aplenty.  Just listen to the song until the 3:00 minute mark and you are going to see what I mean, they have these fucking awesome set ups that are not the orthodox style to set up a song.  I find myself enjoying this E.P. more and more as I listen to it. And Paul’s vocals are cool, just downright evil sounding towards the end of this track.

 

  • When a Meganeura Flies

This is one of my most played tracks off the E.P. and I must admit it all starts with the beginning of the song. The melodic beginning and then the song transitions into a fucking cool groove. This song is stellar in my opinion, I have spun this E.P. for months now but I always come back to this track. I feel like I connect to it when listening to it.  From the beginning to the end, it’s saturated with catchy riffs and a groove you just fall into without expectation. This song is not even their heaviest track, but to me it’s one of their most powerful tracks. The first chorus is undeniably infectious. You can’t help but sing along. And the lyrics fit, I mean if you listen to the song and follow the lyrics, I just don’t see how they could have done a better job.

 

  • Ascension

This song has a cool beginning that fades in but when they get past the introductory section of this track it’s a jazzy groove filled beginning that sets up the first verse…..

 

You know something i’m not even going to tell you how the rest of this E.P. plays out, I want you to check it out and form your own opinion. Because this E.P. is truly something worth listening to. It’s not like typical death metal, and it doesn’t sound like space metal or anything spacey for that matter. It’s not something to smoke a joint and mellow out to, that’s for sure.  It’s different, and that’s what has brought all of us to the metal scene in the first place.  Being different, making music that sounds different, we dress different, and that’s what being a metal head is about. So do yourself a favor and check out this awesome E.P.  Because it’s a solid 7/10 \m/ and it looks like they have some new material in the works.
