The return of massachusetts metal legends SEVENDAY CURSE @sevendaycurse

Let’s go back to the south shore of  Massachusetts 1996, where hardcore and metal fans like myself witnessed the birth of a new breed of metal through bands like  123024_logo

They put out a demo recorded in Hanover Mass at Ultrasound Productions. The Color Blood a killer 5 song E.P. with tracks like Blind Loyalty, and of course the title track The Color Blood. The sound was something that no one had sounded like before, and really no one could pull off again. It was a brutally heavy, yet melodic form of metal with a hardcore feel. Hence the birth of metal core, none of that “ Senses fail is Metal-core B.S. I’m talking the real deal metal hybrid. When you listen to  metal bands from the Massachusetts area without a doubt, Sevenday Curse was the catalyst that created a  scene. Were they the only one’s you may ask? Around that time there were other bands coming out with a different sound,Barrit, Fault, Ookla the mok, however Sevenday Curse really forged a different sound. The heavy vocals, the double bass the melodic bridges, the solos and the heavy badass breakdowns.

What made a band from Massachusetts create a style merging two music elements to form a brutally heavy combination? One could argue that the north-east throughout history have been known to do things differently, live by their own set of rules, and revolutionize. We have had a “don’t tell us how to be” attitude. The style of music that has come from the New England area, the brutality of the metal, the catchiness of the metal and hardcore; it’s known worldwide. Bands like Killswitch Engage, Unearth, The Red Chord,  Shadows Fall, Converge, Revocation to name a few. Having grown up in the New England area , the metal scene has had its changes, but has never diminished in its merciless brutality of sound.

Sevenday Curse put out the album “After The Storm” on Tortuga Records. Nine songs with a tenth hidden track titled “ The Color Blood” that absolutely crushed when it came out. “ Lament of the Fallen” is a great track to use as an example, take that song and then compare so many Metal bands to this song you will now see the roots of New England Metal.

Now you can call me old-fashioned, but as I got older I gave up on the sub-genre and stick to “ metal” when I talk about something that’s high energy, distorted guitars, if it’s not hardcore, or punk its metal. After the Storm came out and changed the way we expected out of metal. The big metal bands like Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Sepultura, they have their place in metal. Sevenday Curse put out After The Storm and created a more diverse, melodic, yet absolutely brutal form of metal. The album starts with an intro, sound clips/ samples and intros were a staple of this form of music. I can take you to several epic albums that had these elements. The way this album starts out is like crowded room, radio fuzz growing louder until all sound stops and you hear John Doe ( Kevin Spacey’s character from Seven) say “ I’m Setting the example”   setting you right up for a fast paced   “Dirge for the living”. 20150730_093238  The songs build up the energy and then you see the melodic elements of Sevenday curse with songs like “ Of Every Season” the sound of waves, and acoustic guitars. “ November” with a tranquil ambiance of acoustic guitars, to set up the final track “ Revelations” (one of my favorites). I have actually bought this album twice, because my original CD ended up getting a spot that would skip in the middle of Revelations that was not acceptable.   Sevenday Curse had a sound and style, a truly heavy and melodic modus operandi that made waves. They played shows, crushed the eardrums of many.

Then they were gone……. Just like that they disbanded before they had a chance to conquer the world, Sevenday curse quietly stepped out of the spotlight. 2000 was the year we lost the mind-blowing boundary breaking band known as Sevenday Curse. They played a one time show in 2002 for a benefit, but stepped back quietly in to the shadows.

That is until the year of our lord Two thousand fourteen when Sevenday Curse rose up from the ruins and got back into what they had started to do, make killer metal and have some fun.

They got back together, they made a Facebook page Sevenday Curse    and in February of 2014 they even started working on new material. They have all gone through the changes life provides all of us. Growing up, focusing on family and careers, but a fire had still been burning inside. A fire that was never extinguished, just burning awaiting the day to burn bright once again. Saturday May 17th the metal gods from the heavens above graced us with Sevenday Curse playing live for their first time in over a decade. Playing material from the days of After the Storm, and picking back up where they left off. Playing killer brutal metal, with surgically precise delivery. Imagining a band room where the instruments have been put down, and collected dust, the members walk in, brush the dust off. turn on their amps/ cabs. look at each other, nod and start right into ” Dirge for the living”.    Flash forward to October of 2014 and the band goes in the direction many bands are going to. Crowd funding to get their material released trying to balance their everyday lives, work, families. They want to put out music, so they created a campaign to get an E.P. recorded. They are a band that is going back to their roots. A whole lot has changed since they were on the scene. Back in 1999 the Iphone wasn’t an option, no one had iTunes. Digital music was not as large as it is today in the sense that there were mp3’s. I had an mp3 player, it was a Diamond Rio and could only hold about 8 tracks. That was mind-blowing as I was one of the few people in my age group that had one. Sevenday Curse had only a few options that were easily available. Cassette, CD, those were the options, with cassette phasing out. There were not as many music festivals for metal or hardcore as there is today. There was no Facebook, no Myspace, no Youtube either. You could not create an event for all of your online friends to be invited to. It was photo copy a bunch of flyers, hang them up at the Bull moose records, Newbury comics, tower records, clubs, basically anywhere you thought a metal head would walk by and see that you had a show. To come back into a scene where so much has changed, and try to get back into things. It has it’s challenges, but the fans have shown their support. There have already been youtube videos of shows that they played, the most recent from this past week. Then just the other day  ( July 25th 2015) they put After The Storm up on Bandcamp.com/SevendayCurse  

With all of the change on the metal scene, also came changes in their own lives. They got older started families, married, doing the 9-5 with their full-time jobs, military commitments. As many know being in a band is not easy, its hard work. Being in a band is very much like having a minimum wage job, and being married to it at the same time. They are booking as many shows as they can, and what i have seen they have booked some great shows so far. It’s now 2015 and they are playing shows getting back into it more and more. The most recent show they played was with Jungle Rot, and On Your Deathbed in Rhode Island. A great show for sure considering Jungle Rot just put out a new album Order Shall prevail, and On Your Deathbed have been playing some killer shows also with some big names in metal. It was a great line up of bands for a summer show. They are booking more shows, and while they are not playing a show every night. They are trying to book shows that will have a great line up and a great crowd. They will even be playing a show to kick off  Revocation‘s fall tour on September 3rd in RI. That is a show I will not be missing.

For the people who aren’t familiar with the band, I bought their album while I was in high school, I bought the album again because I had played it so much and had it for so many years it became old and worn I needed a new CD. New Kataklysm album Of Ghosts and Gods @kataklysmband

Today we see Kataklysm’s latest release ” Of Ghosts and Gods” their twelfth album. Just one of the great examples of what Canada has to offer for killer metal.

To get the most out of this album they released 10 videos, one video for each song, lets start off in the track order.

1) Breaching The Asylum

Digging this tune, the vocals actually remind me of At The Gates from Slaughter of the Soul. Not as deep and previous Kataklysm tracks like Shadows and dust.

2) The Black Sheep

starts out with a solid mid tempo feel, picks up with that classic Maurizio Iacono style, definitely a solid song for the album.

3) Marching Through Graveyards

Blast beats right out of the gate, now this song has promise, more of that Kataklysm feel I am sensing. The first two tracks were good, but I am really enjoying this track more. When I think of Kataklysm it’s songs like this one I think of.

4) Thy Serpents Tongue

This song starts off with a slow riff but when the drums kick in in has that looming death metal feel. The beginning is great really dig that section. When the vocals kick in its a slower feel to it but the pre chorus  picks back up with Oli  playing a fast beat on his drums. The chorus is solid, all in all a great tune.

5) Vindication

Really like this intro, I could probably listen to that on repeat, a solid marching tempo beat quarter notes on the crash feel, then fast riffing Oli delivering the blast beats with ease. This song starts out ready to rip you apart, when the vocals kick in it has a slower feel,  with a pre chorus that keeps the same pace but transitions into blast beats. This song is a killer track a little short for my liking, but it is one of those tracks you will listen through and hit the back button again.

6) Soul Destroyer

Nice little PSA about the extinction rate of the worlds animal population in the beginning, the sound of animals in the jungle and then right into a nice guitar riff and drums. Takes a half time feel, but with a groove that you can move to. This is a song that when played live I envision pits just opening up and masses of bodies moving and colliding into each other.  Not rapid blast beats like the previous tracks, just a solid death metal feel to this song. Nice double bass rolling for the chorus, nothing over the top they are basically keeping it pretty simple for this one.

7) Carrying Crosses

This song has that mid tempo feel again, its almost like they are trying to broaden their musical range on this album. Again there are fewer blast beats. There are only a few short sections  mainly the pre chorus’s have the blast beats going. Pretty steady chugging riffs throughout the whole song.

8) Shattered

This song starts out with guitars holding a note,  then Oli comes in with a drum beat on the rack toms and floor tom for a few bars. Then a drum fill into a nice solid heavy drum beat for about two bars,  into a rolling tom pattern with  crash on the quarter notes.  Slow it down as vocals join in, the verse is simple yet sounds great, pre chorus guitar riff is nothing over the top but fits the song rather well. Not a bad tune, maybe not my favorite on the album though.

9) Hate Spirit

Blast beats right away, this song sounds like it is made to pump you up and get you moving. As soon as the beginning transitions into double bass rolling death metal beat it keeps that feel for a few bars until the vocals enter the mix.  Slower punchy feel.  The chorus keeps that slower feel.  This song so far is not bad, not every song on every album a band puts out will be great. The song does have its message, and the video is well done.

10) The World Is   A Dying Insect

The song starts out with what sounds like stringed instruments just playing random chords and then the guitars come in with a slight acoustic sound for a bar or two then distortion, tribal drum beat. this is a heavy track, at times the tempo changes from fast to slow, but it is a solid heavy track and definitely a great song to end the album with. This track is on my list for the top songs of the album, I really do like this song. In my opinion I like a fast Kataklysm song. When I heard Katakylsm for the first time it was a fast paced brutally heavy song, and so for me it set the bar high. The world is a dying insect is the best song they could have picked to end the album with hands down.

All in all not a bad album, if you are a fan of Kataklysm then its worth the buy, if you are looking to try Kataklysm’s sound out to see if you like it, I actually hold other older albums above this one. but they did release a video for every song leading up to today so I do applaud them for doing something different that other bands have not done yet. Kataklysm may have just started a trend with this and we may be seeing more videos for metal bands before the albums come out. This is a trend that I would love to see because metal bands deserve to have music videos just as much as all the pop and hip hop artists out there.

VII: Sturm Und Drang album review @Lambofgod @Epic_Records

Many if not all of you know that Lamb Of Gods latest album VII: Sturm Und Drang dropped this past Friday. This is a huge release for the band with everything that Randy and company has endured through the past few years.

Lets just get into this  album

Still echoes:

Starts out classic Lamb of God style,  nice guitar riff into drums and Randy s vocals. More blast beats used by Chris these past few albums. They are a band that doesn’t need the blast beats but Chris does a great job with them. Never goes over the top with the quantity of blasts. By the time the chorus comes around, i gotta say i do like the chorus, and then the guitars between will and Mark. They seem to be more connected as a team for this album. Starting the album off with a solid track like this one is a great way to get the show started.

Erase This:

Guitars, drums, i really am digging this song, so far one of my favorites on the album, the classic Chris drum sound/ style his double bass fills are his signature attack. Randy belts out a line, they go into a slower feel than the fast beginning but. Then go into a transition of fast riffs and drums. Break it down ” For  what it’s worth ” great head banging pace of Lamb of God grooves.  This album has a similar feel for me to Ashes of the Wake with the guitars. the fast pace of the song right before the chorus is great, it really builds you up to get into that chorus and groove.  the song  goes right back into the way it started with the riff, and drums, but the bridge has the guitars using a pedal I haven’t heard the guys use in other albums. Damn it sounds good, they are going back to a rock, bluesy feel to the metal. Its like they are adding spices to this album that work very well. The song ends with the chorus and the guitars and drums riff for a few bars then end.

512:

Starts out with the guitars playing and Randy comes in with his spoken word style vocals. The guy really has one of the best voices for metal because to utilize the spoken, and then his heavy lower mid range brutal vocals yet he can still get those high screams. This song is definitely a slower mid paced song, but you will be moving to the beat. It is a solid tune with a great beat, the chorus ” my hands are painted red” has great lines. then into a great guitar solo. The next verse starts and midway through Randy speaks again, going right into the chorus. You can almost feel how the songs and lyrics have such a strong emotional impact on Randy. You can feel it through the music

Embers:

Starts out with an echo like guitar riffs, and you can hear the drums sound like a nice double bass feel with the snare on the quarter notes. Just a solid set up and it fades in clear with a drum fill to enter the clear sound. One hell of a great song beginning in my opinion. When Randy does come in we here Chris switch from hi hats to his crash cymbal then into his splash which is a classic musical move. It just works perfectly for him I mean it is effortless for Chris to play killer metal drums. The song goes into a chorus back into a verse, again into the chorus, and then a bridge that features Chin Moreno’s vocal talents. Randy growls leading up to Chinos classic vocal sound. This section of the song is worth the buy right here. As a Lamb of God fan and a Deftones fan this is a killer track that really works with both Randy and Chino. I would love to see some more collaboration between the two in the future.

Footprints:

Double bass roll and tom roll out, into with blast beats to fill the gap between the bars. This continues until Randy joins in. This is a mid paced heavy tune, with a verse that reminds me of the earlier albums, and then a chorus that brings back the blast beats and into the next verse. Gotta love Randy’s vocals, I hold this album higher than the previous four albums. Nothing but great songs so far.  The lead up into a bridge is brings the listener into a faster paced groove hi hats classic Chris double bass fill.  with Randy screaming and into another verse that has an enhanced sound. That’s the sound of Chris wailing on the bell of his ride cymbal. The song transitions into the beginning sequence for a few bars and then transitions into the chorus with Chris hitting the crash cymbal on the quarter notes to emphasize that this is the conclusional chorus which we bring on the ending sequence. a killer guitar riff, and Randy giving the microphone everything he has left in his lungs.

Overlord:

Now here is the song a lot of people have had a hard time with. It is a slow paced song, with Randy doing semi clean vocals. IT has a very Alice in Chains feel to me. Bluesy rock fuelled Layne Staley-like vocals. This song is the song that so many people will get hung up on. Mark likes a blues guitar sound, this is most likely the most soulful song on the album as far as he is concerned.  The guitar solo after the second chorus is almost too short as far as I am concerned. Maybe they wanted it to be short and sweet, but i would have liked to have heard a little more out of it.  for the listeners who stayed the whole song it picks up speed to a fast paced bridge with Randy doing his usual vocals. The song remains fast paced until t it fades out with the same guitar riff they used in the beginning with a little feedback and some drums. One more chorus to round the song out, slowing to half time emphasis on the crash cymbal, and fade out feedback.

Anthropoid:

Does not hold back Randy is growling some heavy vocals the moment the song starts. a nice up tempo tune, with the first verse  sounding like classic Lamb of God, pre chorus Chris raises the intensity bar with his splash cymbal and then Randy with some higher vocals, the chorus ” WE ARE”  ” WE ARE” the crowd chanting metal anthem of the album. the next verse starts off nice and heavy with half the bars and into the pre chorus.Chris on the splash  into the chorus ” We are the faces of the end,We are the architects of ruin,fathers of rebellion, disciples of the reaper,We are the apex predator”  This song is heavy Lamb of God bringing it back to the “as the Palaces burn” feel to the verse. “Yet still has a Omerta feel to it. The songs kicks ass no matter what way you look at it.

Engage The Fear Machine:

Now Randy has gone on about this song, basically its about the media. It fuels our fears, what happened with Ebola? there was a global panic, and then it vanished.  The song is about the powers keeping the fear machine ( media) well oiled and running smoothly to get reaction from the population. It starts out with a march drum roll feel, with bass drum on the first note of the bars. it progresses into Randy screaming and a mid paced tempo with a really bad ass guitar riff. The verse is a mid tempo line transitions into a killer guitar riff and Chris wailing on the bell of his ride.  The chorus is solid, ” Paranoia writes the checks” its not the fastest Lamb of God  song, it may not be the heaviest either. But it is solid, well written song.

Delusion Pandemic:

Killer fast riff to start out the song. Fast paced, man the guitars are killer on this Chris hitting the bell.  then half time, crash cymbal but still that guitar riff is bad ass. I could honestly have listened to that for 5 minutes alone. Randy comes in with his vocals great verse solid straight to the point. Pre chorus builds the song up with two changes. The chorus ” this is the rise of our demise!  Randy has some seriously powerful lyrics on this album. I did like Resolution, but really this album is the best I have heard from these guys since ashes of the wake. An unexpected transition into a slower pace with Randy doing his preaching style vocals. the intensity level builds its going to get sick in 3..2…1.. slow bad ass breakdown, the pit will go nuts right about now.

Torches:

Has a slower feel to it, Randy talking ” the soul of the nation” tranquil guitar riffs, with very minimal percussion until Randy crescendos bringing the intensity of the verse up for a few bars, then it drops back down to the slower pace feel. the song transitions by progressing with a snare drum pattern and double bass roll leading into a heavy mid paced pre chorus. This song features Greg Puciato as backing vocals. The song continues to build on itself, until “I am the inferno, I am legion” where the song fades out. Definitely a song to end the album with.  Unless like me you got the

Wine & Piss:

Southern rock sounding slower to mid paced song with a solid riff, the verse starts in with slow pace and after the first bar picks up double time for a few bars, back into the verse. it maintains its pace the whole time not many changes in this song. its just a consistent tune. It really has that flip the middle finger attitude throughout the entire song. Not a bad tune, maybe not my favorite, but its still a solid tune.

Nightmare seeker: (the little red house)

More of a fast paced song, emphasis on Chris splash and the guitar riff. Few bars like that until it gains a little more dimension  When Randy comes in the song transitions into the slower but heavy paced feel, with his vocals that growl from low to the higher dragged out banshee style.This is a fun song to be listening to, I mean when the pre chorus comes in the guitars are great, solid chorus. You really have to give it to Willy and Mark they write riffs that are just great. Think of all the songs with pretty bad ass riffs, Laid to Waste, The Subtle arts of Murder and Persuasion, In Defense of our Good Name, Vigil,Ashes of The Wake to name a few. This is a great song right here, everything about it. The bridge  Chris playing on his splash, and then going to the ride, but using his other hand to hit the bell of another cymbal. Then a short solo, into the chorus. “I CAN NEVER FORGET  War is coming, (never forget) War is coming to take us again. War is coming ( never forget) war is coming to take us again!” This repeats a few bars and fades, out with a classic Randy growl,

All in all this is a killer album, best Lamb of God work in a while. Every song has it’s place, every song has it’s own fingerprint making it unique. The album is a must have. Do yourselves a favor and get the Deluxe edition.

New Black Dahlia Murder track ” Receipt” Streaming!!!\m/!!! @bdmmetal @revolvermag

Today we get a chance to listen to a new track from Abysmal, the album due out September 18th from  The Black Dahlia Murder.  As if Vlad son of the dragon was not badass enough, they present us with the track ” Receipt”

The song starts out with an orchestral feel to it with stringed instruments, going into the classic TBDM blackened metal feel. The song doesn’t have any fluff to it, just straight up unfiltered badassery! Abysmal is sure to be a great album if the only two songs we have been able to hear so far are just brutally heavy and fast paced masterpieces.

Lamb of God Embers feat. Chino moreno @lambofgod @deftones

Here it is the Lamb of God track many have been waiting to hear. The song is titled Embers and features Chino Moreno (Deftones) as a vocal contribution.

This seems like a good tune, I like what I am hearing so far from it. It does remind me of the track  The undertow from their last album Resolution. Get to the chorus and to hear Chino on a Lamb of God track is pretty cool. As a fan of the Deftones I do like the contrast between Chino’s vocals and Randy’s vocals.  The way the song starts out really minded me of The Undertow, until Chino comes in to the chorus and Randy and him are  almost going back and forth between them. It really takes the song to a different level, one that I am satisfied with for sure.

New Lamb Of God Video ” Overlord” released check it out @lambofgod

1000x1000Lamb of God just released another video for their upcoming album, and listening to it, reminds me of Alice in Chains. It is a slower paced song, with clean vocals for the majority of the song.  With 6:31 for the song, it has a lot to offer. Its fairly light and refreshing, however if you are looking for the typical heavy as hell metal feel you wont get it until about half way through the song, so stick around don’t just dismiss it. You may be surprised altogether, but the calm beginning, and then to transition into the signature Randy Blythe vocals is cool.

With Randy’s world being turned upside down a few years back, being put in a prison in an unfamiliar area, for the death of a fan. Then to be released, and found not guilty, Randy will most likely be giving  every emotion he felt during that time. So if you are willing to dismiss the album in an instant you aren’t really getting the point of this album. Randy has been to a dark place, and now he has risen up again. Through these songs he tells a story, and you will have to listen and pay attention. Only then will you have a fraction of understanding what not only he went through but the entire band. They are a family and did everything they could to get where they needed to be. AS a band, as a family this upcoming album will chronicle their journey, and that my friends is what’s going to make this album explode.  So check out the video

Olivier Pinard the masterful bassist for the one and only Cryptopsy

As some of you have seen I was able to interview Chris and Flo from Cryptopsy, now for my third interview I was able to ask Oli a few questions. and to talk about their current indiegogo campaign ( http://igg.me/at/Cryptopsy/x/10796470  )

When I saw these guys in Syracuse, I got a chance to really talk to all of them, and also get some impressions from all of them. To watch these guys on stage is just a great show. For all the people in the crowd just thrashing and head banging, a pit only broke out a few times, but for the most part there was a group of people myself included just really taking in the whole experience. These guys give it their all, and part of that is because they are an independent band. They do not have a label backing them up and supporting them. They have the fans as their support. When they get the support they need,  they want to give back, and that’s what helps with their energy  to put on a great show. Oli was in the zone, what I mean is that he was like a different person on stage. After their show when I talked to him, he was just the most down to earth guy. I asked him what one of the first things he would do when he got back home after the tour ended, showered unpacked etc. and he said go to his favorite pub with good friends. After they got back home I ended up reaching out to all of the guys from Cryptopsy, and this is how it went with Oli.

Badger- Did you have fun while you were on the Back to the U.S. tour? Also you had a birthday so what was that like while being on the road touring and promoting the new E.P. and crowd funding campaign.?

Olivier-Lot of fun , old and new friends! The crowd were amazing, I think on that tour we got a bunch of new fans ….And for the birthday , it was an awesome night ,We played Amytiville that night and the guys from Suffocation, Internal Bleeding and Dehumanized show up, good times!!

Badger-I have been both a Cryptopsy fan, and a Neuraxis fan for some time. The technical metal coming from Canada has been just brutal (which is why I like it so much) For you how did it feel going from one killer metal band like Neuraxis, to then playing the bass for the legendary Cryptopsy? And how did you get involved with Cryptopsy?

Olivier- Neuraxis recorded the album ”ASYLON” during the summer of 2010 at Garage Studio with Chris Donaldson . I love to think that he liked working with me , otherwise I don’t think that he would have called me for Cryptopsy haha!

But yeah , the trasition was huge , It was a big challenge for me to play with those guys. I spent a lot of days at Jon Levasseur place’s to learn the old stuff and write the bass line for the Self-Titled as well ….So I didn’t have time to waste!!

Badger- Have you always been a fan of metal? Who are your influences for metal, as well as playing the bass?

Olivier- HUGE Metal fan! Since forever.

I started with alot of classic like :

Iron Maiden (Steve Harris …duh!) , RUSH , Motorhead , Metallica , Megadeth,  Testament , Dissection , Martyr , Gorguts ,Augury ,Neurosis , Pantera , Sepultura , Opeth , Emperor , Suffocation, Voivod and 10000 more…

Now , I’m still interested in the underground scene , bands like Ulcerate , Dead Congregation , Gigan are constantly in my CD player!

Badger- After the E.P. is released will we be seeing any play through videos from you in the near future?

Olivier-Maybe , maybe not haha. I’m actually not a big fan of play through video . I understand why people like that …but for me, magic happen on stage in front of people , not behind a camera in my basement.

Badger- If you could describe The Book Of Suffering E.P. in five words. What would those five words be? Again I want to thank you for your time to answer my questions, I wish you guys the best, I hope you guys make it to your goal, and wish you safe travels for your next trip of touring to promote the new music.

The pricing is pretty fair, you have to figure the cost of things these days, everything is going up. And these guys are trying to keep the prices competitive as well. The cost of Gasoline, and all other goods out there, everything is expensive these days. However the way I look at it.  I am a sucker for a physical CD. for $20.00 I will get my E.P. shipped to me with a digital download, and while some may argue its too expensive. I believe in spending a little more to get a better quality. These guys offer a better quality, and raise the bar every time. Even if you don’t have 20 dollars for the CD. Do some research, a lot of bands are doing digital E.P.’s for $5.00   So Cryptopsy is on point with that, I have never been disappointed by these guys, and i will always be a fan. So whether all you have is $5.00, or not even that, they have a perk for $1.00 contributions. That way you can at least be a part of something cool, and help out one of the pioneering bands of technical death metal.

I got a chance to speak with Flo about Cryptopsy, playing the drums, going independent etc. So allow me to get right down to it.

Badger-So Flo 2015 has been pretty productive for you guys, and with the touring as well as the indiegogo campaign. You guys have been pretty busy and it looks as though 2015 will be a nonstop ride for you guys. So with that said I just have a few questions I would like to ask you.

Badger- You have been with Cryptopsy since 1992. You have seen Cryptopsy evolve into what it is today. What has that been like for you?

Flo: It’s definitely been a trip to be a part of and experience the ups and downs of Cryptopsy for over 20 years. I’ve worked with a lot of different people during this time , in and out of the band, and I’ve learnt a few things on the way ; )

Badger- You are essentially like the father of Cryptopsy, watching it grow, and shaping it for the future. How has that affected you being a part of something this big?

Flo: well I’ve never looked at it as being big or small. I look at Cryptopsy just like my playing, it’s always a work in progress. So I feel very critical about the whole thing. So it’s affect is in a way to try to be better from year to year, tour to tour and album to album.

Badger- You are a phenomenal drummer, and I have been a fan since first listening to “ Emaciate” with that said, what sort of process do you have for writing new music?

Flo: thanks for the kind words! We have used different ways of writing in the past. For the newer stuff we actually sit in studio and go over riff that Chris has recorded. We then try to structure them and piece things together. Some are already a series of riffs that fit, some are alone. So we do a general structure. When we’re happy with that we ll start throwing in traps and different bridges and more tech elements. During this whole process beats and fills come to me. Then I take the riffs home to practice and establish my parts.

Badger-Do you have a game plan for raising the bar every time?

Flo: no real game plan. If the guys and I practice hard enough from one recording to another, you ll be able to tell. In Cryptopsy we concentrate on writing songs first then speed and tech.

Badger-Because as a long time listener I can say the bar gets raised every time without a doubt.

Flo: thanks a lot, well we try and this EP has new stuff that’s pretty sick and so will the next series of EPs promise!!

Badger- Who are some of your influences for the drums?

Flo: I have so many influences it’s not even fair to name just a few but I will. In metal, Sean Reinhert, Gene Hoglan, Kenny Schalk, in other styles, Dennis Chambers, John Bonham, Dave Weckl, Chris Coleman.

Badger-I have heard the jazz in the self-titled album, so you must have some a variety of influences for both jazz and metal.

Flo: I try and enjoy listening to all sorts of different musical styles. It just expands your influential pallet therefore your creativity and ability as well.

Badger- Now that you guys have been independent. Has it made the writing process any different? Trying to deliver only the absolute best and what you want the fans to hear?

Flo: there’s less pressure to deliver something but more pressure on us to make it as good and as marketable (package wise) as possible. We have worked with a lot of different artists in the past and still have yet to find the go to guy, lol

Badger-Is there a lot of songs that you guys end up putting on a back burner as a result?

Flo: I wouldn’t say many songs cause it doesn’t get that far, but many riffs yes have been canned.

Badger-Is it more rewarding, not financially but rather emotionally and mentally putting out new music and playing out, and getting the fans reactions?

Flo: it’s totally cool when we believe in something and are happy about a new creation then see that our fans are just as stocked as we are!! Great feeling!!

Badger-And my last question which I have asked all the guys is;

If you can describe The Book Of Suffering E.P. in only five words. What would those five words be?

Flo: brutally fresh and truly catchy!
