Today the Devil has brought his pals The Devils of Loudun to the stage. And we will be checking out their E.P. released back in April.  This is such a surprising E.P.  From Seattle these guys don’t follow the typical Seattle music scene style. (Pearl jam and other 90’s grunge bands) nope these are delivering some seriously suppressed Seattle melo/tech death.  This cool E.P. really flew under many peoples radar, and I’m not entirely sure why that is.  I suppose possible they were overshadowed by a larger mainstream release. But one listen to this E.P. will have you wondering why you haven’t heard them until now.  But take the chorus of the song Thrown to the Void for example. That shit is catchy as hell, and while we are the subject of that song. I will admit this is actually my favorite song off the E.P.  Simply put, that song fucking rips.  The song really delivers the melo-death aspect of this band really putting a lot of emphasis on the keys.  There’s melodic metal bands, and melodic death metal bands, but I am really impressed by the blended styles because these guys really make this sound their own.  Bonus points to Vance because I am a sucker for guttural exclamations, blurts,   spewt( see Ryan Travis for explanation) that retching sound that some vocalists add and it’s like having a drummer who has a cowbell at his set.  It’s just another tool and I fucking dig it.  Adding the keyboards, and the really fucking contagious hooks, these guys have pulled off an amazing feat.  Everything is technically precise like tech death, its heavy as fuck like death metal and the melodic aspect does not soften the blow. If anything, it’s the one two punch these guys pack.  I’m hooked I don’t know about the rest of you, but if you haven’t heard this E.P. yet, get on that. Songs to def. check out are going to be Thrown to the void, Cast The Stone, and Until the night ends. But wait that’s three out of five songs. Well I just figured if I told you to check out those three you would end up checking out the rest, because let’s face it. This E.P. kicks ass, and it’s time to give it a listen. If technical melo-death is something you would be interested in, than this E.P. is for you, 8/10 \m/

Today the devil has brought us the second album by CO melodic tech death Jedi’s Vale Of Pnath.  If for some reason you missed this album when it came out, or you still haven’t listened to it, then you fucked up.  This album rips, it has a melodic yet technical death metal feel to it, and the use of classical piano as well as organ in the tracks Klendathu and Heart Of Darkness they set the bar high.  There are albums that are great, and then you have albums like this one, from start to finish it fucking kills it. Start with the first track of the album “Blacker Than” which is the most subtle way of the band showing the listener the bar that they are raising right before you. It starts out so mellow and smooth (in comparison to what you will experience later) with the acoustic guitars playing for just shy of half a minute before the guitars go to distortion and the drums come in. But it’s the vocals at the :48 second mark that leave the lasting impression.   I can honestly say that after listening to this album since the summer I am a fan and will be for the foreseeable future.   Now the tricky part is trying to tell you guys why you should check this out, and what songs to listen to. But the fact of the matter is that every track on this fucking holds their own.  It really depends on what your personal tastes are, but just know that Vale deliver the tech in a way that many haven’t done before.  They are incorporating all these different elements together but they pull it off. The talent and the shear amount of craftsmanship that went into making this album is astonishing.  Drums are surgically precise and have a hard attack.  The drums sound great too, but that’s not all, I mean each instrument can be heard and fuck these guys are talented.  But let’s shed some light on points of interest, now for starters I am going to explain probably my favorite part of this album. On the Track “A Nightmare Phantasm” you listen to that track and get to the 1:31 mark and you are going to hear one of the coolest, most bone chilling guitar solos of 2016. It’s short and to the point but man that guitar wails.  This song is my most played track off of the album to begin with, however you still have tracks like “ The Serpents Lair” that track absolutely decimates the feeble listeners who doubt what Vale Of Pnath have in their arsenal.  I would love to tell you the one to three tracks you really should check out but the fact of the matter is, that this album is 100% bad-ass. The talent these musicians have is impressive, and the sound quality and production are in top form. These guys did their homework, they took everything they could from their first album, and improved, they did not disappoint with this album.  It doesn’t happen often but this album is a solid 10/10 \m/ and should be in everyone’s collection who are fans of melodic metal, death metal, tech death and all the sub genres that are spawned from the previous mentioned genres. Vale Of Pnath will be a big name, the proof is in the pudding, and they only have time on their side to keep raising the bar in the same way they have been.

Yea now you know why this is a must have, (so if you have a metal head on your Christmas list and don’t know what to get them look no further) and why it got a 10/10 \m/ rating.  The album, plain and simple kicks ass, a whole lot of ass, and it just keeps kicking.  I’m still spinning this album, and I haven’t gotten to a point where I wasn’t amped up when listening to it. And that guitar solo in A Nightmare Phantasm gets me every time.

1) Nuclear Messiah

This song is a quite chilling and visual song giving the title of it, and the classical style of the song.  Jim Gregory the mastermind behind Solium Fatalis has done it again. This song is not just another intro track, it’s the bar they just raised. Now you’re going to have to buckle yourself in and get ready for the riffage.

2) Symbiotic Plague

Well this song starts out  very cool, solid intro with the guitars and drums playing  and building things up  and vocals join in before the thirty second mark. I dig the rhythm of this song, it has an impending and sinister feel about it.  And I am really digging the drums on this track so far.  It is worth mentioning that there is different drummer than on the previous albums, and based on how the drums sound. I am liking Jeff Saltzman behind the set for Solium. This is a cool song, very catchy, and I should mention the guitar solo right around the 3 minute mark.   This song has a lot of that blackened melodic death feel to it. I like this track because it has new blood on the drums. Being able to compare this track to the previous albums and seeing how Solium has evolved. This is a great track especially to be coming out of the intro with.

 

3) Fractured Divinity

This song has a slightly more moderate pace about it, but none the less the track kills it.  Vocals remind me of older century media, Earache and Nuclear blast bands. You know what I am talking about, old Arch Enemy, Carcass etc. They have a darker delivery that’s more of a primitive form that is very effective with the imagery of the music really.  At three minutes and thirty one seconds this song cuts right through you with ease. Its not a long drawn out tune, they just steamroll right on through. The song is a killer track, it sinks its claws in to you with the guitar solo around the 1:50 mark and keeps you hooked. I mean listen to the guitar solo and tell me you aren’t interested in what Solium has to offer.

 

4) Myopic

This song has a short fade in before that rhythm takes a hold of you and the 175 bpm gets you locked in for the ride that this song is going to take you on.  But damn does it get you moving before the vocals even join in, and I like the cymbal accents Jeff is playing on the ride.  The one thing I will say about Solium Fatalis, is they have a “take no prisoners” delivery to the music.  I mean take the vocals right at the :47 second mark,  no fucks given right there. They don’t hold back anything, ever. And that’s what I like, zero fucks given from these guys.  They formulate a song that’s as catchy as it is visual and when listening you find yourself to be lifted to your chill zone because you zone out almost hypnotized from the music. It flows in a way that is very appealing, straight to the point and catchy.

 

5) Hymn To The Infected

Well if that’s not a kick ass beginning, than I don’t know what would constitute as one. Just shy of thirty seconds and that set up was killer, fucking riff-nado, and a hailstorm of blasting drums.  I like this track so far, it’s profoundly dark in tone and delivery. From the album art to the music it’s all pretty dark, and its catchy as hell. Not to mention the guitar solo about halfway through the track really hits the spot. I like when a band throws a guitar solo in the song, Solium Fatalis are good for that. You have a lot of talent in the band, and then to not display what they are really working with would be an injustice to their music and fans. When listening to this song I have to admit, the talent that’s packed into this group is amazing. Its songs like this I get the distinct feeling that Solium Fatalis will become a more familiar name with the release of Neuronic Saw, and anticipate their fan base will continue to grow rapidly if they keep making songs like this one.

6) Retch Atma

This song has more of an old school feel to it, and that beginning is awesome. When listening to this track you will undoubtedly be moving your body somehow, be it tapping your feet nodding your head or just losing it completely and throwing haymakers. This song has a feeling of satisfying your bloodlust.  Yea it’s like that, this is like the soundtrack for a criminally insane charismatic cult leader planning on opening the ninth gate. But before you know it the song is over, they packed so much into three minutes and eight seconds that kept you captivated the entire time and when you realize it you are reaching for the back button to listen to it again.

7) Harvested to Necrosis

Alright, so this is the song right here. For Solium Fatalis, they have put out three albums full of solid tracks, but there is always that one track that has just a little more to it. The song has just a little more meat to it.  It’s the song that many will deem their favorite, well let us be the ones to say it first. This is our favorite track off the album.  After listening to the album in it entirety a handful of times this song is it. This song is the gem that is the one you should listen to first if you are going to formulate your first impression of Solium Fatalis.  If you aren’t moving to this song when you have gotten to the one minute mark then you aren’t listening to the same thing I am, this song rips. The 1:53 mark they kick it into high gear with filthy guitar riffs and ravenous blast beats. They made a statement, they came for blood and now you got a taste of it yourself. Do you keep listening to the album or spin this track a few times, we had to listen to this track a few times ourselves because it crushes.

 

8) The Carrion Feast

They start things off heavy for the first ten seconds and then take it up another level when the vocals come in. This song is a slightly slower tempo again, but for each BPM less they make up for it in the dark angry delivery of the music.  And I am really enjoying those backing vocals on this track, this song is going to have to be my number two. There is something very visually detailed about this song, and if that’s what they are going for, then the guitar solo starting at the 2:38 mark seals the deal.  You can’t listen to this track and wonder why Solium Fatalis isn’t coming out of the mouths of so many more metal heads out there.

 

9) Contagion

Cool perpetual guitar riff sets up the blistering blast filled drums and the vocals are right alongside them. This song has a lot of built up animosity. This track is savage as a fucking primitive beast with a thirst for blood and its feeding time. This is another great example of how they do not hold back. This song rips on so many levels, it makes a statement. The ferocity of this track is undeniable, the need to listen to this track also undeniable.  The beginning rips right from the get go and then following the drums and the rhythm. They hit us early in the song with a killer guitar solo around the 1:31 mark. This is one of those songs that when you listen to it, it gives you the mean face. You know what I’m talking about. This is an example of mean face right below. Jim gets it, be like Jim and shred some serious metal.

10) Serpent Crown Redux

The final track off of the album, and while we would love to break this one down. You really ought to do that yourself. We have to save this one for you to man an opinionated decision  on your own.

 

This album is brilliant, Solium Fatalis are such an underrated band. The production of this album was stellar, not to mention it had Chris Donaldson of Cryptopsy working on this at his studio The Grid.  You don’t go to the grid and get a bad product, you don’t go to the grid if you don’t have something awesome to be recording. I listen to this album and every time I do I find I could sit and just loop tracks over and over. This album gets the job done from tracks like Nuclear Messiah, to contagion, the album has a lot of range, a lot of dark and savage range. But couple that with the talent those guys have is what makes this album a hit.  Check this shit out, you won’t be disappointed if you do. 9/10

  1. Prison of Existence

This E.P. begins with this melodic and somber introduction that flows for thirty seconds and then the drums come in to set up the vocals. Wow she has a good sound in my opinion, Haydee really harnesses those melodic death metal growls, but has a really smooth voice for the clean singing. Really smooth, like if you heard her singing clean, you would never know she can flip a switch and get down to death metal vocals.   One thing I am really focusing on is the talent of the other musicians in this band.  Often times you find a female vocalist that has a set of lungs that can go on for long periods of clean singing, and then growls that sound so cool, but the rest of the band is so-so.  Not the case here, this group doesn’t get to use the vocals as the selling point of “female vocalist” just to get a targeted fan base. Nope, everything about this song is crisp, every transition they have gone through all the way to the guitar solo at the 4: 11 mark as brief as it is. It was clean and they come back for about 30 seconds to  set up another guitar solo, only this one has a little bit more behind it.  Killer track, and I am really digging the vocals for the last minute of the song.

 

  1. Renewal

I love the simple drum intro, and the guitar riff that follows. It has a great driving rhythm, just gets you moving.  And they take it down a level for the first verse, she brings the volume and tone down. The first lines of vocals are clean, but building Setting things up for the harsh vocals to take over the next lines. The more I listen to this, the more I feel like Aversed is picking up with the melodic metal from the mid to late 90’s and refreshing it.  I mean I can’t be the only one that digs the transition at the :45 second mark.  This is a song you can tap your foot to,  it has a great rhythm, and the tempo matches to make this song a really enjoyable track off this E.P.  This song has   that magnetic characteristic, it’s really catchy, and fun to follow along to. I will always add points to a song based on if it brings certain emotions that bring me back to my younger days.  When you hear something and it makes you smile, or say fuck yeah.  Music that gets you moving and makes you break out the air drums or air guitar while listening to the track. This is a perfect example of that.

 

  1. Living Denial

A cool but bri4ef drum fill sets up the song, this time the song has a much slower feel. But I dig the layered vocals from Haydee, and then right at the :39 mark they kick things into high gear. I love this transition they went through to this point.   This song doesn’t sounds like what you would have expected from the first thirty seconds.  They completely took this song in a different direction than I anticipated, and damn I am glad they did. This song is catchy as hell, and I love those guitar tones. I can’t really tell you much about the guitars since I don’t play, but I know when I hear something I like and the guitars on this track sounds great, this song sounds awesome.  And who expected the vocals at the 3:47 mark? I did not, Haydee has more range and sound than we expected. Not sure if any backing vocals besides her are being layered in.  However the more I listen to this E.P. the more I am digging the talent of this band.

 

  1. Sorrowful Eyes

So this song starts out with a nice simple melody and then picks the tempo up. I am listening to this and wondering what happened here?  I mean the song is good musically.  But I feel as though maybe not all songwriting is done by the same person, or persons.  And this song is a track that makes me feel that way. Because it doesn’t really sounds like what I heard from the previous three tracks. Sure there are harsh vocals double bass, distortion. However when the song kicks in, it sounded like a different band, with the same vocalist, and different ideas. This song to me sounds like a hard rock song.  Something I would hear on the radio, I think they are showing that they have a bigger range than you would expect.  The song is good, I think though, that it takes away from the E.P. a little.  Solid song, but it sounds too radio rock friendly to me. Like they went from being a band like Arch Enemy, to a band like Evanescence.  Don’t get me wrong, there is a time for a song like this, however I just didn’t feel it.

 

  1. Aversion

This song is a little more in the same direction that the first three were going. I dig the beginning of the song. The first ten seconds or so is cool, and they transition again a few times before the first verse. Which really reminds me of that 90’s melodic death metal like arch enemy and Crisis. Once you get passed the first verse they hit you with a guitar solo right around the 2 minute mark, and damn. It’s a subtle solo that speaks volumes, not all solos have to be the fastest shredding solo. Think of it like gravity blasts for drums. Are they cool, yes, are they always necessary? No they are not, but to rip a solo that has some soul behind it, I will enjoy that every time.  This song is just shy of eight minutes long and they sure as shit pack a lot into this one.

 

After listening to this E.P. I gotta say I really dig it. Aversed has a sound very similar to bands like early Arch Enemy, they have a fresh sound that’s blended with late 90’s melodic death metal.  They seem like a force to be reckoned with when it comes to their sound.   I like the dauntless delivery. They are so confident and you can hear it in the music.  The first three tracks are killer, Sorrowful Eyes was an interesting choice. I’m not going to say the song was bad it just didn’t affect me the same way that the rest of the E.P. did.  Now I need to point out, that one song out of 5 is not bad by any means, and this E.P. is quite possibly going to take this band places. I can’t listen to this E.P. and think that they are lacking drive and ambition. They definitely don’t lack anything when it comes to their music, they fill their music to the maximum capacity.  Melodic metal/ Melodic death metal fans will appreciate this E.P. – 6.5/10 \m/

  1. Visceral Doubt

This is a great introductory track to this spectacular E.P.  It begins with background sounds of tranquility, and a pleasantly melodic guitar melody that fades in with distortion and around the same time, the drums come in with a series of fills that really helps to build the song up. Then right around the :58 second mark they take things to the next level with  vocals coming in, a killer driving guitar riff, and a whirlwind of blast beats.  I must admit I was a little surprised when I saw the length of the song is only two minutes and two seconds long, with  the first minute being a melodic introduction, but they really pack the song with elements of melodic metal and technical death metal.

 

  1. Amputated From Actuality

This begins as the first track is fading out this song fades in but right from the get go you have some fast drumming and a killer guitar sound to welcome the listener.   The song has a solid tempo, it has the drive to get you energized by the music.  I really thoroughly enjoy the guitar tone and the riffs   this song. Everything comes together, the guitars are complimenting the drums, the vocals are a force all on their own, and then the chorus is damned contagious.  It is catchy and grips you, you can’t help the feeling of joining in during the chorus sections.  This song is exactly what you’d expect from Cognizance.  Melodic, technical, and impressive, because the song actually feels like it is longer than only four and a half minutes long. They pack so much into this song that you are hooked and you don’t want it to end.

 

  1. Choking on the Sands

This song is a slower song than the previous track, but is rock solid.  The song has a driving rhythm, and that’s something I have come to expect from these guys.  They are playing songs that like an engine just keeps going. It has a driving force that gets the listener going, and they add in things like the guitar solos at the one minute and two minute mark.  I really dig the vocals, as they have this hollow sound to them, a low gravely hollow sound. Flash forward to the :12 mark when they have less than a minute remaining and hit us with a fucking cool groove that will leave you head banging and ready for anything.

 

  1. Secondary Volition

The song has some atmospheric sounds in the background as a guitar fades in with a melodic solo performance. This is an instrumental track but it has the Cognizance flavor, it’s not like an instrumental that sounds nothing like the rest of the album. This song fits, literally anywhere on this E.P.  The sound of the song matches all the other songs, it’s just the mellower refined side of Cognizance and also give us the nod that the next song is going to kick ass.

 

  1. Spectrum

The beginning of this song sounds pretty badass, it starts out with a 120BPM feel with a cool groove. They give you about fifteen seconds of that section before they kick things into double time.  Which is roughly the same time when the vocals join in, and then David kicks things into high gear with his rugged drumming, only to progress to delivering the blast beats.  Right around the 1:45 mark the song changes things up and hits us with a slower roll of heavy groove.  They really know how to build a song up and then deliver on it.  Every change they make, does not disappoint. The guitar solo at the 2:47 mark is a perfect example, the tempo may have decreased, but the sound of that guitar really cuts into you. It’s a simple, yet so effective, the sound has soul in it.  I know people want a shred fest blur of fingers moving all over the fret board, but a simple, solid, and soulful solo will have a lasting impact on the song and the listener.

 

This E.P. is awesome, I love it, for the few who have heard of this E.P. well the hype is absolutely real. The really had a laser focus on writing this album, because I just didn’t catch any flaws. There isn’t a single moment of any song I didn’t care for. This E.P. delivers some great melodic tech death for an incredible price.  I am a sucker for physical copies of music, but you can’t pass on the price the digital E.P. is available for.  Everything about this album is very appealing to me, the guitars have great sound, the vocals are tight, and the drums have surgically precise timing and execution. This E.P. earns this 9/10 \m/ rating.

Mist Of Misery set to release Absence on August 31st 2016

Their new album is a huge step forward in terms of production, song writing, lyrical depth and overall atmosphere. Mist of Misery has entered a new phase, one that aims to evoke depressive, melancholic and ambient atmospheres in the minds of listeners at a whole new level. On this album, it was done mainly through the introduction to even more melodic and symphonic influences. 1) Bow Down

This track is really more of an introduction track, not bad either, just a little over a minute long. It has this melodic technical metal feel to it. But the real show begins with track two “The Maze Of Unhappiness”

 

2) The Maze of Unhappiness

The whole band comes together for the first note of the song with a low guttural growl getting first blood. The first ten seconds of this song go fast, but it’s a great way to get acclimated to the sheer brutality that Onomasy possesses. The vocal range happening throughout this song is killer. Alvaro can hit some disgusting lows, and then his high vocals are razor sharp. When you get to the 1:15 mark you can hear the highs in perfect form. The guitarists are tight, they are precise, and it sounds like both can play a solid lead with one of them delivering a short solo around the 1:00 mark it’s a really brief riff really. But it has a old school feel to it. It’s placed well because they are hammering away with this tech death sound then an old school riff back into the rapid fire blasting tech death explosion.

3) Gray Days To Live

Way too early to call this song my favorite, but I have been spinning this track a lot lately. It starts out with a short bass intro, and then   the drums come in blistering fast and heavy, while the vocals come in high and fast almost right away.   Just listening to the guitars my forearms are getting cramps. The amount of discipline that this whole band has is impressive. This is a song that really grabs you, the rhythm is so catchy it pulls you in and you can’t help but move. The lead guitars around the 1:08 mark are great, and this is only ten second portion of guitar greatness coming off this album. Right at the 1:40 mark they get low and slow with their brutal and infectious transition. Its heavy as hell and when the next verse is seeing the finishing touches the guitars are tearing shit up all leading up to my favorite part of the whole song. It starts at the 2:27 mark. When the vocals come in, its catchy, its heavy, and you know that if you are seeing this unfold at a live show, the crowd is going to get rowdy. The gang vocals in the background and then Alvaro’s vocals layered over fucking work. After that section the guitars give us a melodic guitar solo with some Latin soul feel to it. Not a shredfest, its soothing in a way, it has local flavor and then they come right back out to end the song as hard and heavy as it began.

4) Ashes and Dust

A short guitar riff starts things off with the drums following right in after mere seconds. The vocals join in at the :21 second mark just after the rest of the band has done a number on your senses with the breakneck speed on the drums to the blistering pace the guitars have set up. In the first sixty seconds of this song you will develop a thought process as to why you haven’t heard this band before now. I am really digging the rhythm right around the :30 second mark it has a menacing feel about it. Right around the 1:00 mark, they hit you with a slowed punchy section that bridges to the next verse knocking out some teeth on the way. This song takes you on a journey through the low   bludgeoning death metal style, and speed things up with their rapid fire tech death sound.

5) Digging Up The Moon

This song starts right out of the gate with rapid blast beats and then a quick precise guitar riff. The vocals come in at the :05 second mark with the high range vocals. The intensity from the guitars and matching the vocals with the drums. They have unleashed a full on audio assault, from the rapid highs to the punishing low guttural growls. This song relentlessly pummels you into submission. A perfect example is at the 2:35 mark, the vocals are infectious, and the guitars showcase their ability, while the drums are grinding away blast beat by blast beat. At times Alvaro is nailing the highs and executing with a style similar to Trevor Strnad from The Black Dahlia Murder. This song is badass, makes you eager to hear the next track.

6) Descending to The Other Side

The song kicks off subtlety with a brief intro and then a nice melodic guitar solo starts things off. The song has a nice mid paced tempo, but it doesn’t stop them from   hitting us with blast beats and a killer guitar riff leading up to the : 36 mark when the first verse begins in brutal fashion. The song has a cool groove to it, keeping you moving right along with the changes. Right around the 1:30 mark the guitars are playing a killer riff harmonized before a short solo and into the next verse. Around the 1:52 mark they get low and slow, you can feel the bass drum doing a slow roll helping elevate that sinister rhythm. This song has so much to offer in its short just shy of four minute run time.

7) The Legacy “Interlude”

This is a nice melodic interlude with some ambient sounds and an acoustic guitar playing overtop. It’s a nice mellow 1:38 long track that lulls you to your safe zone, and prepares you for what is “The Jailer of the Lives”

8) The Jailer Of The Lives

The song begins with a mellow guitar riff, and the occasional drum cymbal, this is a nice relaxing introduction that seems to pick up from “The Legacy” before the guitars get distorted around the :35 second mark. That’s when the S.H.T.F and the vocals come in hard while the drums are breaking down the walls. Listen to the guitars tear shit up at the :55 second mark, while the song gets ready to transition into its next verse. The verse is a heavy death metal feel with plenty of old school character, and then as they come out of the verse they bring the technicality of modern metal. This song is heavy, slightly slower than most of their songs, but will knock you on your ass with ease.

 

9) In Memory Of The Reaper

The song fades in quickly with the band exploding in to the song at the :04 second mark. That’s when the guitars show off some of their talent while getting the song cranking. When the vocals come in at the :25 second mark, they come in heavy as hell and low, and immediately replying with the high rapid fire vocals. This song has enough to get your teeth sunk into and feed of the groove that they have laid down. Between verses the guitars give us a cool little solo and the vocals come in high and fast again. Just after the halfway mark we get a short bridge consisting of high vocals and a guitar solo, and then back into the verse. Right around the 3:20 mark they kick things into overdrive and get real heavy. Making the last thirty seconds of the song brutal, and catchy to the very last note.

 

10)I Am

The song begins with the guitars playing a cool riff for the first forty seconds or so. This song has an evil agenda by the sounds of it. I mean what is happening at the 1:00 minute mark with the rapid blasting, and the high vocals. I mean Samuel is completely decimating the masses with his footwork on the drums. The whole song has a groove about it, something that really pulls you in. A perfect example is   around the 3:16 mark we get a killer soulful guitar solo that lasts just shy of thirty seconds and then the band comes in hard. I enjoy the fact that they give it 100% to the very last note.

 

11) Advantage of The Disadvantage

For the first twenty seconds these guys really showcase their technical discipline and their ability to play with precise execution of every note. When the vocals join in they are low and heavy as hell for the beginning of the verse, the follow up to the verse Alvaro is cutting through the lines with his highs. Right around the 1:30 mark there’s a short pause and then a quick shredding guitar solo for about thirty seconds before transition back into the next verse. I love the tempo of the song, it has a driving beat to it, and it really gets you moving. This is a killer track and I love the balance of the vocals. At times he is really getting those lows, and then hitting the highs. But at times they are blended without too much overlay.

 

12) The Heritage of The Loyal

The song begins with a chugging guitar riff for only a few short seconds before the drums and vocals join in. All the other songs before this one seemed to be more of a precise note by note lay out of the song. Whereas this one seems to have a less technical approach to it, incorporating some dissonant sounds with more chugging riffs. This song is like all the animosity that has built up, has now exploded and this is the effect of that. The song is more death metal, with a slower pace, and low vocals for the majority of the song. Right around the 2:23 mark the song goes through a funky transition and then blasts out to a more melodic death metal feel. With a piano being heard in the background.

 

All in all this album is badass, and completely surprised me as I had not heard Onomasy until today. This album is easily an 8/10 rating from me, they showcase serious talent among the group from the guitars to the drums, the bass is not shy either we get to hear the bass stand out in quite a few of the songs. And Alvaro’s vocals are on point, seamlessly going from guttural lows to precision highs, the guy adds so much dimension to the songs by utilizing his range so well. This album  is more than just a tech death album, it breathes life into a genre that is starting to get more and more popular by the day. With so many bands playing similar styles of tech death, Onomasy try to break that pattern, by even changing things up with the last song being less tech death and more melodic death metal. One thing is for sure, if you haven’t heard Onomasy, or this album you need to. Right now.

  1. Parasomniac

The song starts out with a simple introduction, right away the rhythm grabs a hold of you and you lock right into the groove. Full of blast beats and a catchy guitar riff, this beginning is great. I dig the short piano, melody before the vocals kick in. When the vocals do come in, the song gets heavier. I love the guitars at the 1:20 minute mark, the guitarists have great chemistry together, rhythm is keeping the groove going and then the lead is hitting us with that riff. This is a solid track and a great way to get introduced to their musical style. They even throw in a spoken word bridge that transitions to the next part of the song. This will have listeners moving their heads or tapping their feet. But before long the blast beats kick in and the song gets dark again. For me this is like listening to a band that was created by taking one part Opeth (My arms your hearse era) At the Gates, and adding some technical metal, and blending it all together. If this is song number one, I am very interested in what’s going to follow.

 

  1. Light Of A Different Sun

Love this song so far and its only twenty seconds in. It has a great beat, great energy, and the vocals come in exactly how you would expect them to. Right when the rhythm goes into playing triplets and the vocals are low and you can follow right along with the lines. “Awaiting the light of a different sun”. This song really has an old school feel to it, the basic rhythm is what reminds me of At The Gates, but then you get the guitars around the 2:57 mark that really make me think of Opeth style melodic guitar riffs/solos. The drums are so crisp and accent the solo well. I love the way they end the song, just continuing the rhythm, and keeping that infectious groove going to the very end. For the title track this song is awesome, it might be my favorite, but then again, I have heard the song premier for The Three Poisons, and that track rips.

 

  1. The Three Poisons

Holy shit this song starts out awesome, it has an introduction with the piano that eases the listener into the music. It slightly reminds me of the beginning of “Right Now” by Van Halen. It’s that piano melody that builds you up, and then the band takes over. The energy of the song skyrockets when the band joins in at the :38 second mark. Then you have that driving guitar rhythm setting things up for the blast beats. This song has hooks right from the get go. This song will have anyone listening to it, involuntarily head banging. This song rips, it is catchy as hell, and fun to listen to. Yes fun, because when listening to metal, it should be a fun experience. Playing air guitar or air drums rocking out along with the song, and this is a perfect example of a song that possess that quality. The song doesn’t ever give up the groove, all that happens is that with each transition, you go through the changes and then get hooked with the next riff in the song. I love the guitars at the 4:20 mark, with the piano playing, the guitars are driving hard, and then the solo at the 4: 40 mark, Is a soulful solo. When you hear it, you understand the simplicity and how it soars above this song with you hanging on every note.

If the intro got you hooked, well don’t worry, because they end the song in similar fashion.

  1. Cult Of Reanimators

This song starts out with guitars and drums trade off bars for the introduction and set the song up to be a fast, dark song.   I don’t know what I want to focus on first, the drums, the vocals, or the guitars. They all sound so damn good, and yet you just can’t get enough of the little things that each member brings to the table. Listen to the guitars at the 1:50 mark for the quick picking from the guitars. The vocals have this hauntingly dark and caustic sound right around the :45 second mark you will hear what I am talking about. This song is the best to follow up the Three Poisons with, since it is not as fast paced, but it doesn’t dull anything down either. It really has the same type of attack, but slightly slower allowing you to catch your breath and get acclimated to the music

 

  1. Face Of Asag

Well if there was ever a debate on what song they should end with, they got it right with this track. Just listen to the drum roll and guitar start things off, queuing the blast beats, and infectious rhythm. If you haven’t gotten hooked in these first thirty seconds you are not listening to the same thing I am. Right at the 21:59 mark the guys make the song go from being catchy, to becoming more of a full blown pandemic of killer riffs, blistering precise drums, and the vocals fit the song to a “T”. Right around the 4:30 mark the song continues to roll right along without any vocals until the last thirty seconds. But those last moments in the song will keep you rocking, and ready to hit the repeat button.

 

This E.P. was This E.P. was awesome, they really bring a lot to the table with this release. This is the first time I have heard Archaic Decapitator and I was blown away. Each song had little characteristics that flooded my mind at moments, such as Light of a different sun has the sound and  intensity with guitar riffs and solos that actually made me think of old Opeth. They are like a melodic, blackened, prog-tech-death band, however subgenre classification aside, they play some bad ass modern death with a blackened and old school feel to it as well. This is a stellar E.P. and I couldn’t think of giving it anything less than an 8/10 rating, this will impress anyone who listens to it. From death metal fans, to tech death fans this E.P. will fit into most any metal heads music collection.

  1. Starborn

The song begins with a foreboding tone lingering for about ten seconds and then some melodic sounds start playing from the guitars and the percussion adding a dramatic feel to the song. This little intro plays out for just about a full minute, then they unleash upon you some serious speed, and blackened melodic metal. The blast beats and the guitars are tight, I am really enjoying the vocals as they come in. This is a solid track to start and album with. The even throw some falsetto vocals in the mix also which is a pleasant surprise. This is lie taking several different styles of metal and putting them into a centrifuge and pulling out only specific elements and utilizing them precisely. This is a six and a quarter minute long song filled with stellar guitar playing, solid drumming, and the vocals both main, and backing really pull it off.

 

  1. Tale Of The Wayward Voyager

This song starts out with fast guitars and drums right away with a melodic guitar riff being played over a driving rhythm guitar. This has a solid groove right out of the gate and this song you can really get into easily. It’s too early to call this a favorite, but it has all the makings of the album favorite. I hate to say it, but listening to this song, is like listening to what it would sound like if Cradle of Filth was actually good still. These guys are delivering that symphonic / melodic blackened metal without the theatrics.   This is such a good song, they even know when to play a simple and melodic guitar solo.

 

  1. Fed to the Wolves

The title track begins with some ominous sounds fading in and then the drums and guitars start in. The drums play a marching style cadence for a few bars and then the entire band joins in with a slower but really rock solid metal sound. I really like the section at the 1:45 mark, there is something about it that fits just right. I really dig the harmonizing guitars, the song as a whole has a tempo of around 110 BPM and is about 6:21 minutes in length every section is enjoyable for fans of heavy melodic metal.

 

  1. Unholy Harbingers Of War

A cool melodic guitar solo with some echo starts the song off luring you into a sense of a slower, calm and collected atmosphere. The drums roll right into a much faster tempo, delivering a whirlwind of guitars and blast beats, the vocals are great especially during the chorus sections when the darker lower vocals have a line, and then the backing vocals do clean gang vocals. This is very much a battle anthem, right around the 3:00 mark you will know what I am talking about. These guys do not let up on this one, this is a song that marches along and doesn’t not falter, or lose any of its momentum. Around the 4:20 section we get a great guitar solo, some serious shredding is happening here. This is an all-around rock solid song.

 

  1. Hail and Kill

This has a mysterious beginning, it goes from guitars and drums playing only on certain notes for accent. Then clean vocals singing with acoustic guitars playing a very melodic for the first 1:22 minutes of the song. Then the band comes in hard and fast with an explosion, blending clean and heavy vocals at times and trading off bars for other times. This is a very anthem sounding song, even going back to the blistering fast moments filled with blast beats and low growling vocals. This song is very enjoyable, with a great guitar solo, these guys are having fun, and playing a great metal tune. They do a great job with this Manowar cover, because of this cover, I could honestly see them pulling off other Manowar covers perfectly.

 

  1. Ortum Aurorae

For the first five seconds you can’t hear much except for an ominous tone, and then more and more the melodic key boards and orchestral sounding percussion and instruments fade in. The chugging guitar riff that follows adds some dimension before a melodic guitar and piano segment. This is really just a cool 1:31 minute long instrumental track.

 

  1. The Scourge Of Man

Ortum basically fades right into this fast paced metal masterpiece here. This song, sounds absolutely bad ass in the first thirty seconds played. This song has an insatiable rhythm and the groove is great, you will involuntarily fall into by head banging at the moment the first note plays through your headphones or speakers. This is my favorite song off of this album. The song really keeps you amped up until the very end where it slowly brings you down with the sound of a piano playing.

 

  1. As Embers Fade

Heavy guitar distortion and pounding drums being played in a way where certain notes are really being accented be it on the toms and bass and then the cymbals. This is like an instrumental track where it’s almost like a victory march in the way it sounds. This is not just an instrumental track to get you to enjoy the sounds of the instruments without vocals and lyrics. This is almost meant to give you a sense of satisfaction that you leave the battlefield alive and well being victorious in your conquests.

This was a great album, I had never heard this band before so I was really unsure of what I was getting into. They just gained a fan that’s for sure, they play some really fast, and infectious blackened melodic metal. This album really surprised me, I was expecting something along the lines of a Viking/folk metal sound, and that is not what came out of my speakers when I put the CD in. This album is easily rated at a 9/10 as every instrument, every moment is great its enjoyable, and powerful. I guarantee that popping this album in for a listen will blow your expectations away.

Metal Festivals happen every year all over the world, these festivals are one of the greatest shows metal heads end up going to. Getting a chance to see metal bands from all over at the same venue, be it an open air stadium, or other concert halls. Many metal heads like myself have great memories from going to big festivals, hearing and seeing bands we are stoked to see, to discovering bands that we had never heard before. In the Northeast U.S. there is really only one big festival that has been happening annually since 1999. But that is just not enough to satisfy the appetite of metal heads across the region. This is when a drummer and tattoo artist from the Massachusetts area decided he had waited long enough, and was going to take matters into his own hands. Jamie Cross came up with Hothfest last year and is doing it again this year around. Hothfest -2016 we will be witnessing 30 bands over the course of two days. To make things even better its on a weekend, Saturday and Sunday, that means for most you wont have to miss work to go to an awesome metal show.

I had the chance to talk to Jamie and ask him a few questions about Hothfest 2016 to get an idea,  what started it all, and what to expect.

 

 

Badger- So this is the second annual Hothfest, have you already noticed more exposure of this festival than when you did it last year?

 Jamie- A little bit, I mean I’m trying a bit harder, I went to other shows and have been passing out postcards to everybody. Of course there’s Facebook and doing the old school thing driving around and putting up flyers but I’m just hoping for the best. It should be good

 Badger- Yea I think so, and what prompted you to organize a metal festival in the first place?

 Jamie- When I did it last year I kind of did it just for fun and it turned out pretty good, and then I had bands from across the states offering to play so, I mean I probably had one hundred bands offer to play this year so I had to pick and choose but yea it’s awesome.

 Badger- That’s cool, that very promising now I am looking forward to 2017 already hearing that.

Jamie- I know right me too, I can’t wait

 Badger- So what has the general reaction been from the bands last year? Were you like reaching out to bands last year, and this year they are coming to you to do it?

 Jamie- Yea I reached out to a couple that played last year and they did well, and a lot were friends of bands so I had people say “ you gotta check out this band,” so I got a lot of that and bands started hitting me up offering to play, offering to get on it.

 Badger- Now here is a metal festival with  a lot of bands playing,  do you have any sponsors for this? Or is it all you?

 Jamie- No I do it all myself man,

Badger- That’s pretty cool, good for you man that’s awesome.

Jamie- Yea I just put like the music stores and logo on our artwork because they were letting me hang stuff up there to help out.

 Badger- Now do you have any times for what time the doors open and what time it’s going to run till on Saturday, and then the same for Sunday?

Jamie- Yea I am not positive on that last year doors opened at noon, and bands started at 1. So I’m assuming the same, I haven’t figured out the times yet, I have a few other shows going on right now also that I am working on.

 Badger- What other shows do you have going on?

Jamie- Well this Saturday I have what’s called jingle jam, it’s a toys for tots thing with 9 bands on that, it’s a metal show all ages two bucks bring a toy. It’s called jingle jam and there is a Facebook page for that too. I got a couple of tribute bands on that and some locals playing.

Badger- Any shows besides that one?

Jamie-Then after that, the next one is actually after Hothfest and its January 23rd and called musical masterpiece theater the art of the guitar edition. It’s going to be a metal show for the sickest guitar players. I have Mark Rizzo from Soulfly headlining, and then I have Dave Sharp and the Solar Power, a few other ones are going to be on that, and I am still waiting to hear back from them.

 Badger-So I know, I can’t remember where the venue was originally going to be, but was it a case of so many bands and people showing interest that caused the venue change?

Jamie- No actually something had happened and they switched owners so I am actually having shows there now. I had already moved it so we are going to keep it where it is (Maximum Capacity) I know the guy that owns it now so and they own both venues so I will be throwing shows at both venues. Yea I have a big summer show I throw that has about 30 bands called rocking on the river and it’s my birthday bash, and we have that at the waterfront. So I already booked that again this year.

Jamie-That one’s kind of like Hothfest but the summer instead. I do about four or five big shows a year, when bands play every weekend people sometimes don’t want to show up. So (with a big show they are more likely to show up)

Badger- yea I know my old band we would play the same club almost every weekend because we were tight with the owner. But we knew that some people didnt want to come and see us every Friday or Saturday, it is what it is, and you always have the group that wouldn’t miss a show for the world.

 Jamie- We have our first show in NH playing at the Shaskeen pub in Manchester. It’s January 2nd and I am pretty psyched because we haven’t played anywhere else except from around here so it should be fun.

 Jamie- We sound like COC and Pantera that who we get compared to all the time, two of my favorite bands so I will take that. We are half rock half metal so.

 Badger-Are there any updates you want the readers and local to know about this show? Your band? What you are putting into this, other stuff about you? I know you do tattoos so…?

 Jamie-Yea I own a tattoo studio, I do some work for bands cd artwork, t-shirt all that stuff. At the shows the background for Hothfest that’s one of my paintings I did I actually just got the posters in for Hothfest, so I will be driving around and hanging wherever places will let me.

 Bader- I know you had just done a painting event,

Jamie-Yea called who wants to paint with me. We had a blast, it was a lot of fun.

Badger-Is that something you think you will be doing more of?

Jamie-Yea every couple of months I am going to do it, this time around I am going g to limit it to around 25 people so I know and have them pay up front. We had a blast, listened to metal and local bands all night.

 Jamie-If I could add one more thing the band Defeated Sanity will be here all the way from Germany they haven’t been in the states for about 5 years. So that’s going to be a pretty cool deal that they are playing at Hothfest and they are bringing a band called Iniquitous Savagery from Scotland with them so we have this whole European/ UK tour coming this way and also a band from California, and then metal bands from NH, MA, Vermont pretty much everywhere around here.

Jamie- Dehumanized will headline Saturday, and carnivore will headline Sunday

Jamie-Sunday is more of a local thing, and closer, and the travelling bands are playing on Saturday.

 Badger-That’s pretty good planning, especially for like Defeated Sanity who are on tour. Thank you for setting up a sick metal festival, thanks for trying to keep the metal scene going around here, and thank you for the phone call.

Jamie- Cool thanks man.
