I’m stoked to bring you a look at the review for the upcoming split EP with Fumigation and The Path To R’lyeh.

The first four songs of the EP are Fumigation. This is them at their most gruesome and organic sounding yet. The approach to this EP was much more old school and gives a vibe of walking through an abandoned house that is covered in mold and cobwebs, to open up a cupboard and it be filled with a massive next of spiders.

The EP starts out with a grim build up into a cool heavy dissonant riff which transitions into a nice head-bangable verse that uses some of the same chords. The chorus is faster and has an enjoyable fast riff with more dissonant chords at the tail. I like how the theme of the first song seems to end riffs with a similar feel, but not the same part. There are some brief slams and more verses which flow well. They even make the main verse riff groovier which has a nice effect at one point. After the next chorus is goes to a series of wicked riffs that are made for a circle pit! The song continues to finish strong with sweet riffs and angry vocals. Their half of the EP continues to utilize some catchy tremolo riffs and lots of catchy Old School, bouncy but somewhat Thrashy riffs too. A Beard Full Of Maggots is full of exciting riffs and slows to a slower almost Death/Doom part near the end which is killer for a brutal and slow headbang.

The bass begins to stand out much much more in the second song, Forced Vaginal Harbourage. He weaves in and out of the riffs and the riffs themselves are more melodic as well and quite catchy, as well as pretty progressive in the intro. Near the end of the song the bass has some more sweet low but bouncy lines. Through most of the music, the bass is mixed in, making the tone nice and thick. It is audible but he only steps out of the rest of the arrangement occasionally. The parts all fit the songs and the low clunky tone sounds sweet.

You won’t really hear much blast beats in Fumigation at all. They have more Groovy and Old School vibes, especially in the drumming. There is some blasting in Forced Vaginal Harbourage. Aside from not utilizing much blasting the beats do fit, and there is some very consistent double kick. I like the organic sounding mix on the kicks and cymbals as well. Whole kit really. It has nice panning as well in the mix. Earwigs & Earwax has ripping double kick and super-fast tremolo riffs most of the time after an awesome and nostalgic King Of The Hill intro clip, perfect for the bands theme, featuring Dale Gribble leaving an angry and deranged exterminator phone message.

 
The vocals are also pretty old school in a good way. They have a low mid bellowy shout tone that almost reminds me of Psycrpotic but heavier at times. The vocals can also get pretty guttural at times and occasionally use semi high accents. While the vocals on this EP do not have the same badass powerful crisp low that their previous full length had, it is more comparable to the transition that Bloodbath went through vocally. This being a more putrid, organic and raw sound with plenty of passion. There are quite some brutal moments in Earwigs & Earwax, as well as some of the more “shouty” parts. It is a great and diverse performance. They are a unique tone that is hard for me to describe, and at times remind me of Deathgrind. The “shoutyness” that is incorporated almost reminds me of what could be the beginnings of those ‘hallowed priest shouts’ that Zombiefication and Apocrophex and Hour Of Penance use sometimes. It sounds kind of agonized and desperate. I like it. One other neat thing that adds to the vocal diversity is that each song has some guest vocals. Which becomes more apparent and distinct with more listens.

 

The second half is The Path to R’lyeh. This is their debut release and a rather impressive one at that. While none of them are brand new to the genre or scene either, they are still relatively unknown. They play an aggressive and technical Lovecraftian worship themed Death Metal and they have a pretty refreshing sound.

It starts with a cool groovy slam with a blast and pauses before coming in full force with heavy blasting, cool tremolo riffing and powerful vocals. After they change heavy riffs a few times they go to a more almost atmospheric part with more prominent and great bass, vocals come in and they continue to fluently turn it into a sweet techy verse with equally prominent bass and guitar. I must say I really like this riff. They go back into the slam from the start with the blast. He goes on the mix up the cymbal work and it is really enjoyable. They then go to another fast but slightly “slammy” riff into a heavy ass slam with ripping double kick and pretty brutal but not overly guttural vocals.

The next song comes in with a catchy kind of Melodic Death style Thrashy riff. The vocals in this song switch depending on the verse, from a more love mid ranged bark to a wicked cool low tone to semi guttural and guttural at times. The vocals start to stand out more to me at the 1:10 mark when they change riffs and he goes lower. It is a very cool tone and I feel that it hits a bit harder than the more mid range tone, which is still a good one.

The following song starts out fast and strong, opening with a quick drum fill into furious riffs and drums and powerful low vocals. This is the first demonstration of highs in the album and it may catch some off guard. They are a rather blackened sounding shriek that has a piercing and agonizing pitch. Once you get used to them they are pretty badass, but definitely sound a bit unexpected almost every time. It almost reminds me of the ‘pterodactyl scream’ from Unhuman. The vocals and drums are totally furious in this song and they have some cool Origin-esque moments.

The final song starts with a super-fast riff with some quick gallops thrown in and techy fills. The drums are ripping the whole time with nice switching up on the cymbals quite often. The cymbal work right around the middle is totally excellent. The vocals are powerful and pretty brutal at times. Near the end of this song there is several sick groovy riffs that are really well executed.

This is a cool split EP of two bands that are different enough yet familiar enough to totally work and be enjoyable as one full listen. Their songs are quick and hard hitting. These bands managed to write some catchy songs, without any solos whatsoever. Proving that good songwriting really does topple over all. Though, I do love me a good solo. I would love to see the addition of tastefully placed solos into these bands music down the road. Perhaps that is not what they are going for, but here and there to mix it up like that is great in my opinion. Go pre-order the album now, it drops next Friday!

Acranius – Reign Of Terror- Album review 7/10 \m/

Reign of Terror starts out with a solid introductory track beginning with radio transmissions growing in volume and fading in,  then the drums and guitar kick things off musically to break this song out of its package. And also to give the listeners a simple two minute acclimation period to get adjusted to the brutal slamming death garnished with a dose of groove.  They follow up  that with Kingmaker This song starts out with the drums getting started with a ten second set up and then the song takes on the personality of an armored tank. It’s a low and slow style song, with a killer groove on the guitars for the verses.I must admit that I was not expecting so much groove from these guys. I mean listening to Outlaw it has this virulent edge about it. And it’s not just the rhythm or the chorus. I mean everything about this song is magnetic.  The drums are perfect, there is literally nothing more the drums needed to do, to accomplish something this satisfactory.  I mean quite frankly I just really dig Rob’s drum style. The sound of the drums is great, snare does not have a ping to it.  And it doesn’t seem like he puts too much thought into things like gravity blasts. In fact it seems like he wants the listener to be able to follow with the beat, but he pulls off some great sounding fills. For example the very beginning of Warpath is such a killer yet simple set up.  Alternating snare bass drum and the tom, and then rolling the bass with the rest of the fill and when you hear it, it is in fact a simple enough fill. But it’s the sound of the drums themselves, the tempo, and really the confidence Ron projects from his drumsticks. Speaking of Warpath let’s talk about that section right around the one minute mark. You know what I am talking about when you listen to the track. It’s going to hook you right away but if it doesn’t then the solo snare pop at the 1:20 mark followed by the drum fill and heavy dose of double bass is going to get you going. But the song hits that breakdown at 1:55 and that’s when shit has hit the fan in the pit. There is no way you can listen to this song without wanting to throw some haymakers. I just don’t see how it is possible after I have listened to it myself.  But they follow up with Battle Scars and holy shit does it have this solid thirty seconds of menacing brutal introduction.  Vocals come in only seconds after that killer intro. It’s a bit of a slower song coming in at around 120BPM but they seem to have this ability to get the listener hooked every song regardless of tempo, blasts, anything like that.  After spinning this album for a bit, I have come to really enjoy their sound. They have no gimmicks, they have no need to sound like anyone else. They don’t live by anyone’s rules, they just play a really catchy form of slamming death metal. Lastly they seal the deal on this album by ending with tracks like “The Executioner” (holy shit what a punishing track it is too), and “Died a Liar” They came to fuck shit up, it’s apparent that what they set out to accomplish was to make some slamming death that’s going to get you hooked and to detonate the pit when they play.  I really enjoy this album,  I was not expecting this album to have so many killer hooks it really is a rock solid album. 7/10\m/ go on an have a listen for yourself to the track Kingmaker

Today the devil has brought us “deformity, the sophomore album by New Jersey’s slamming death act Cognitive.  The album begins with a solid introductory track, filled with gruesome riffs, a hearty helping of blast beats, and samples to set the scene. By the time you get to the second track off this stellar album, you may have already decided that you were intrigued and ready to listen to what these guys are going to pull off. Well Birthing The Deformity is a cool track t follow up Awakening The Miscreation. Haunted justice is a solid track, but possibly my favorite track comes in fourth on the track list.  And that is Beneath The Floorboards. I really dig this track as it has gotten the most plays out of the album. But the album as a whole is fucking awesome. When we got our hands on this it was a great day because this album right here has gotten a lot of rotations by us. I’m am very pleased by this album, as it is meticulously catchy rhythms and the technicality for precise transitions between some killer riffs. I really dig this album and you know it is a great follow up to their 2014 self-titled album. While their self-titled album had a small melodic element about it, Deformity does not possess that characteristic, but is much heavier.  They really seal the deal by ending the album with a punishing track like Merciless Forest that solo at the end does it for me. This track rips. This album rips, and it’s why we have been enjoying it so much, enough to earn this one a 9/10 \m/

Dehumanized- “Beyond The Mind” album review 10/10 \m/

  1. Worthless Prosperity

Kicking off the album is this first track that begins with some shuddersome tones and arbitrary cymbal rolls to transition the song from this introduction. To the molten death metal that I know Dehumanized bring to the table. And surely at eh thirty second mark, a short and sweet guitar riff sets up the song nicely. Mikes vocals are spot on, this is death metal the way I grew up listening to it.  This album is going to have the same affect that Internal Bleeding’s “Driven To Conquer” had.  This is a slower pace song than some but this has all the elements you look for.  From the opening riff, to the groove of the song. And not the “whatever” the fucking new slang groove means for some emo death core band out of So Cal. No I’m talking the groove, meaning you lock in to the tempo, you are head banging with everyone else in the crowd and the band. You are savoring this song and are singing along. Its catchy it’s awesome, and it’s a groove you can adhere to.  If this is how the album is going to start out, I know that Dehumanized have big things in store for the listener.  And looking at the rest of the track names these guys definitely have something up their sleeves.

 

2. P. C.C.R

This song starts out with a flowing groove made up of the chugging riff and double bass. The drums rolling right along, and guitars giving us a solid riff to get acclimated to. This goes on for about thirty seconds and then shifts tempo at the :33 mark with some blast beats.  Continue on another thirty seconds and then they kick things into high gear.  For me this is when the song gets rowdy, they lay into with this infectious groove.  These guys hit you again and again with rock solid   death metal retribution in the form of killer guitar riffs, classic death metal vocals coming from Mike, and then of course my favorite member is always the drummer. George is responsible for the sick drum beats and he doesn’t reinvent the wheel.  He doesn’t get selfish with fills he plays death metal straight up and sounds great doing it.

 

3. Beyond The Mind

This song starts out with a short but simple introduction lasting about twenty five seconds before the vocals join in on the fun and continue before the :47 mark where the song transitions into an accelerated pace.   With the beginning of the verse having a faster tempo and blast beats, where the second half of the verses are a slowed down death metal groove.  This song actually satisfies the fast paced cravings as well as the slower groove filled death metal moments.   This is a song that you will be head banging right along to from the first beat.  This is a solid track and really the introduction was a solid beginning.  Right at the : 20 second mark I was really getting into the song.

 

 

4. Black Market 2099

This song starts out with a sound clip from Total Recall and then following that a classic death metal guitar riff is played. And from the moment that riff begins you know that this song is going to kick ass.  Right at the :33 second mark when vocals join in, you know there is no turning back now.  This is the death metal I have been looking for. This song right here. This is a perfect representation of a band killing it.  No over the top fancy frills and thrills. They do it old school.  My favorite part of this song comes at the 1:35 mark. Listen to that riff, and the set up for the vocals at the 1:44 mark. If you don’t find yourself following his every word and head banging right along to the groove.  I unquestionably love this stellar song, and have been listening to this album for about a month now.  This is the one song that seals the deal for me. I love this album and this song is an instant classic.

 

5. Abyss Ambassador

Now I know what some of you are thinking, if Black market kicked so much ass, than how does Dehumanized follow up a track like that? Well they do it with Abyss Ambassador. This song will have the feeble minded shaking like a leaf by the end of it.  That opening riff is another example of a perfect set up. I know in the first ten seconds of listening to this song, that it is not going to disappoint.  Just for a moment listen to the groove they have going between the blast beats and the guitars. Listen to the vocals and try not to get pulled in. This song is awesome, has some killer guitar riffs, but man you can really get into the vocals, and the lyrics.  This is what death metal sounds like when it’s done right.

 

6. One North

The song opens with a sample track from the Halloween remake with Danny Trejo’s character talking to Mike Myers.  Then right around the :23 second mark the band  gets things started with  a slowly approaching, yet  menacing rhythm and then vocals coming in. “ One North….. One North”   the song cultivates a slower feel  until they get to the two minute mark where they kick things into double time, picking that pace up and  hitting us with killer riff after killer riff, and infectious  lines.  Go to the 2:24 mark where they really take things to the next level.  For just shy of a minute they pull off this diabolical arrangement of heavy death metal punishment.  The kind you want to raise a beer to, yell “fuck yeah” and start head banging again.  This track is such a solid addition to the album.

 

7. The First Immortal

This song comes right out of the gate with Mike’s punishing vocals and a killer death roll from the guitars and drums.   This song is great from start to finish, I must have played this track a hundred times and it satisfies my ravenous death metal cravings every time.  This whole album does, but each song has its own little distinguishable moment in making this album an instant classic among death metal fans.  Not to mention this song is less than three minutes long, the guys have packed so much into this song, there is zero fluff factor.  They are blunt, straight to the point, and sacrifice nothing at all in order to make this song hit you where they want it to.

 

8. Last Words

This song starts out with drums and bass just doing their thing for about eight seconds until the guitar fades in and then vocals join in.  With a tempo of around 130 BPM it’s not a rapid fast blistering speed song. It’s a solid and steady death metal track, just listen to the bass in the beginning.  This song starts out with so much stability that it has a more brutal attack.  I mean just adding the bell around the : 35 second mark add emphasis on the beat.  I love the simplicity of this track, it holds down that well recognized death metal sound.  When listening to this song right when you get to the 3:05 mark they hit you with these blast beats and a cool riff that amps you up.  There is no enigma, or mystery behind this song, they made a killer, solid, simple and effective song that please the ears.

 

9. Drawn By Blood

They don’t waste any time getting the ball rolling here.  From the moment the song begins you have been pummeled with a chugging guitar riff, and battered by  the drums for a few bars. The drums begin to progress tactfully, before the tempo increases slightly, but man the vocals on this song are great. Guest vocal spot on this track really adds dimensionality to the vocals.  Right around the :37 mark you can hear the guest vocals come in, and then around :50 they start trading bars with Mike.   I love way they slow things down to take you out and pummel you relentlessly at the 3:27 mark.  Then they end up coming out of that but admittedly only for a short period of time and then go back in to the low and slow audio beat down of the listener.  With less than thirty seconds left of the song they escalate that tempo right back up with some menacing riffs and blast beats to finish it off.

 

 

10.Telepathics

Love the drum roll out to start the song, and then the melodic guitar riff comes in with another drum roll fill.  When the first verse begins, I gotta say I really dig this song, it’s not my favorite but it has so much to offer, just like all the rest of the songs on this album. The song is so damn catchy, just listen until you get to the 1:41 mark and you see them pick the tempo up and the intensity.  But just like most of the other songs, when you get to a point in a song that you are impressed by. They hit you with another element within the same song that makes you appreciate the song more and more, and then you just find that you keep spinning this album more and more.

This album right here, is the album that everyone needs to check out. If you say you like death metal, than this is what you need to listen to, because these guys nail it. Probably the most underrated death metal band, but this album should change that. Beyond the Mind is an example of death metal done right.  I have been listening to this album for a month and I cannot get enough of it. They hit it out of the park with Beyond The Mind. Tracks I personally recommend is Black Market 2099, Abyss Ambassador, and The First Immortal.  If you want to listen to a few songs to gauge the album. These three tracks are solid, and the ones I have played the most. This album is a must have for anyone who calls themselves a fan of death metal. I love it, and this album has only made me enjoy Dehumanized more, and made me become more of a fan of their music. Dehumanized made this an instant classic in my opinion. This album is absolutely no fluff, straight up death metal, no Bullshit.

They earn a 10/10 \m/ and I stand by that. This is one of the most underrated death metal bands out there.  This album is hit after hit a solid album that continues to grow on you the more you listen to it.  They put a lot into this album, and I am confident enough to say that “Beyond the Mind” should be on your playlist.  The sound quality is great, the song writing is on point, and I was never bored listening to this, if anything I got amped up and have no plans on taking this out of rotation for the rest of 2016   For fans of Internal Bleeding,  Suffocation, Pyrexia, Skinless, and Dying Fetus.

Mastication Of Brutality Uncontrolled Preemptive Space Warfare Album Review 7/10

  1. Preemptive Space Warfare

This song begins with a little sound clip for the first twenty seconds and then the bands starts playing a low and slow sludgy rhythm that builds up to another section of rhythm and sound sample. Some chugging riffs and double bass, for a few bars then a few bars of blast beats. This seems to be strictly and introductory track.

  1. Mother Earth Abortion

Guttural vocals blast beats, rapid guitar scaling, and pig squeals. This is some slamming squealing and rapid vocal delivery of the verse lines. It has a solid beat and you can follow along to it, it sounds like Dying Fetus may be an influence for these guys with the guitar pinch squeals.

  1. Brutal Laser Devastation

Some guttural vocals and a solid groove integrated with rapid blasting and a driving guitar riff set things up for a killer verse section with malicious guitars and brutal drums. This song has a great groove about it especially around the one minute mark. Pig squeals and guttural tunnel vocals are the main lyrical style for the next minute and then the song goes back into a sinister riff and rapid blasts. It is a solid song that has a great groove, this song is contagious, almost too short because I have hit the repeat button a few times you just cant get enough.

  1. Milkstreet Mass Collision

Blast beats and growls layered over a diabolical riff kick things off, this has a great tempo and a solid groove. IT is a high energy introduction that rocks you for just under one minute where it slows down to deliver slower heavier blows for a verse and lasts about thirty seconds and goes right back into some high energy brutal blasting and squeals. This song is a pit destroyer, from the high intensity sections to the slower heavier brutal sections, at two minutes four seconds in length, it could be a little longer but maybe they felt it was the right length for the listener’s safety.

  1. Life-Form Adoption

Growls, and blast beats, guitar riffs that pull off that death metal squeal similar to Dying Fetus. This song has a solid pace, and a great rhythm, you will find yourself head banging, and taking moments to enjoy the lead in from the guitars at the 1:22 minute mark, it has that solid death metal guitar riff lead in. and then the song takes a dismembering turn at the 1:38 minute mark, the blasts the vocals the guitars. The only thing that can be said is that it was a great surprise and brutal as hell. I am really enjoying the guitars and drums for this track, the guitars are playing some great riffs that have classic death metal sound, and the drums are executing perfect blasts.

  1. Human Resources

The song begins with a cool riff and groove you are instantly head banging to and you don’t even know what is about to happen after the first twenty seconds but you are going to dig it. Rapid verse delivery following the rhythm. When the song slows down, it does not sacrifice its groove for a moment, you can follow along head bang tap your foot throw some hay makers. This is a solid brutal death metal track that fans across the death metal scene most likely will find pleasure in listening to it. Then the breakdown detonates and things get real slow and brutal to finish the song off.

  1. Prophecy Of The Apocalypse

This song begins with a low and slow introduction that builds up into some blast beats following the same riff, it has a concrete groove about it and it is the interlude which in terms of this song is the moment when all hell breaks loose at a show the pit is blowing up and limbs are thrashing and bodies convulsing.

  1. Orbital Corpses

Blast beats tear things up right out of the gate with a death metal guitar riff similar to that of Dying Fetus again. The verse is filled with mean and decimating percussion, that leads up to the 1:04 minute mark of lone blasting opening up for a mean guitar riff and then a sickening groove chugging along and recycles into a low and slow brutal death punishment that lasts for the rest of the song just slightly building itself up more and more while continuing that beat and groove.

  1. Infrastructure Destruction

I am digging the guitar riff that starts this song off, it has a real dark death metal tone, and the drums really hit it off for this section. It has a good pace and delivers a steady string of brutal lines where it stops to get heavier around the 1:15 minute mark where the slow and punchy groove hits you with the rapid pig squeals followed by guttural tunneling vocals. The guitar riff right around the 2:00 minute mark sets this song up for wave after wave of death and brutality.

  1. New Space Order

Mean, menacing and devastating growls, with a killer guitar riff and blast beats open this track up and the band unleashes everything they have in their arsenal for this song. The main riff is very catchy, almost infectious. The song has the death metal guitar riff squeals, and is brutal and punishing. The song isn’t even that far in and the rhythm at the 1:52 mark is awesome, coming out of it is long drawn out vocals with great percussion layered with the guitar riff. This song will have you head banging the entire time, I have to say they ended on a great note, and this is my favorite song of the album.

This album gets a 7/10 it is absolutely brutal, and the drums are perfect for what they are trying to deliver for sound. The guitar riffs are just dark and menacing, while the vocals are nothing but that soulless guttural lows and pig squeals thrown in at precise moments. This is a damn good album and I look forward to hearing more of them in the future.
