The Disciplined Drummers of metal for March 2016 is the heavy hitting Adam Jarvis

This months Disciplined Drummers of metal we spoke to  Adam Jarvis one of the hardest working drummers in metal today. He is known for playing behind the kit  for bands like Misery Index, and Pig Destroyer to name a few. So to help you guys get through the hump day, here is an interview I did with the man himself.

2220161518

Badger- So last time we talked was back in October you were on tour, it was a great time I know I had a blast. Some good beer was consumed that day haha.  Then a few months after I see an announcement for a new project, and just recently saw a video of you tracking drums. So the big news is God Enslavement, tell me a bit about this new band you’re in.

Adam- Yea so the album just got mastered I believe over the weekend so I’m supposed to be getting the finalized tracks and it should be released by late spring early summer, I may need to get back to you on that one. But yea its guys from all over Europe, and Germany

Badger- Yea it’s a pretty diverse lineup I mean you have Bjorn, then you, Vince, you have Julien from Shattered, you know you have Kevin, I mean everyone in this lineup is pretty notable. This is like (in my opinion) a super group.

Adam-Yeah you know, the one guy Bjorn hit me up, and said “you know we got this material and you know we have all talked about it, and we think you would be an awesome fit, and we think its right up your alley.” I have been approached by multiple bands and usually I need to at least enjoy the material to put my name on it. I don’t want to record something just for the sake of recording something and having my name on it. It’s essentially going to be a part of my legacy you know.

Badger- Yea you definitely want to take pride in your work, you want to do it for the music, and what you want for sound, not just anything that comes your way. You sound like you are doing it because of your love of music and metal, so that’s cool.

Adam- Yea exactly so, yea when I heard the first couple of songs I thought “damn those are some killer riffs.” I believe it’s like 8-9 songs. And you know I used to be in Criminal Element with Vince Mathews and he was in Dying Fetus. They were actually going to have a different vocalist, so I was asking them because I had only heard the music so I wanted to know what type of vocals would be going over the top. Because dude, vocals can make or break a band, they are very important. I mean they have always been very important to me even more so now sometimes I think “ hey this band is pretty good, and then I hear the vocals and think Damn it WTF”

Badger-Yea they can definitely make or break, but Vince Mathews, that’s pretty cool because the last I had heard he wasn’t doing too well, but obviously now he is ready and able to do vocals on this project. I liked when he was in Dying Fetus as well as Criminal Element so I’m stoked to hear his vocals laid down on this.

Adam- Yea and he helped me out a lot when I came out to Maryland , in 2004 first place I lived I was with Vince, hahaha those were some crazy times so it came time. The guys were like “so the vocalist backed out, do you know anyone that might be able to fit or may be interested.” And the whole time when I was listening to the music I kept think “Damn dude Vince’s vocals would be a perfect fit over this.   So I hit him up, and he was really excited that I asked him to even do it.   I called him and said “yo dude I would like you to be a part of this” and he was really taken back by it and was like “holy shit I can’t believe you asked me to do this” For me I’m thinking “dude your motherfucking Vince Mathews what are you talking about”

Badger- Sometimes there’s someone you know is perfect for the position and then you hear them and it justifies things and locks everything in.

Adam- yea so I’m stoked for people to hear it and its just straight up old school death, thrash, there’s some grind influence. It definitely has some more of that old school feel and approach.

 12710771_1674015842858406_5438965510103524664_o.jpg

Badger- That’s awesome! I can’t wait to hear that.

So 2016 this makes band number 5. You have Misery Index, Pig Destroyer, Asthma Castle, Fulgora, and now God Enslavement, what are we going to see in 2016 from the other bands? You put Stratagem out last year so I’d say it’s safe to say you’re not doing a new album with them right now but any tours?

Adam-With Fulgora we have a few songs written, we have a song that we recorded at Phil’s studio, and that’s supposed to be released on Housecore TBD so yea it will probably be a while before we get a Full Length out I’d say, it might be possible by the end but maybe 2017. Asthma castle recorded about a year since I did the drums, but unfortunately our vocalist quit, so that was a bit of a setback but there was like one guy that I thought of that when he quit we recorded this , I mean we aren’t signed, this is like a side project for me. I love it, it’s a different change of pace, and we all get along so we have a guy and we are going to start jamming with him. Actually second jam will be this week. So hopefully vocals will be done by this summer and released this year. And PD is about 4 songs in for the new record, so we have actually jammed 1 of those songs a few weeks back, so that’s exciting to be working on some new Pig Destroyer  material. And you know my cousin John is in the band now too so. It’s the first record with him on it so that’s exciting.

Badger-Oh hell yea John, he is no stranger to the business so that’s definitely cool

Adam- yea I mean he’s in Agoraphobic Nosebleed and in Fulgora so were in another band back in the day called all will fall, so yeah me an him have been jamming since I was probably 8-9 so it goes back a long way. As far as new stuff coming out that’s probably it. Killing gods is about 1.5 year old?

Badger- yea it came out around my birthday so around may 2014

 Adam- Yea you’re right yea.

Badger- so I have seen a few big shows you guys are booked to play here in 2016, so I’m guessing your touring schedule is starting to pile up

Adam- yea unfortunately we can’t tour as much as we used to I work full time on top of being in five bands, and Mark has a kid now, and he’s going to school. And he actually just started working at Extreme management group.

Badger- hell yea that’s a big outfit

Adam- yea they rep bands like suffocation, they have a lot of people under their belt. So he just started working for them so that’s real cool. Jason back and forth from states and Finland, so he’s actually working on his PhD right now and yea we just got to be more selective.

Back in 2006 we would do 200 shows a year so anything that came up we would say yep let’s do it, but now a days we have to plan, we have a lot more responsibility now so we can’t be selfish, marks got a wife I have a girlfriend it’s not easy on people. But we do have the one European run this summer. We are hitting some pretty awesome festivals. We’re playing one in Vancouver that’s going to be badass it just got announced a few weeks ago and it’s got Suffocation and Dillinger Escape Plan, and Job For A Cowboy their first show in a few years, Cattle Decapitation, Dave Lombardo’s new band Dead cross will be on it. So yea a lot of awesome bands. And when we got the offer we didn’t really know , we thought we were going to be the headliner and then this thing gets booked and I looked and called mark and was like “ holy shit dude this is a big festival” it’s not like doing down to the dew drop in.

Badger- one question because I am in ton of FB groups so I have seen a few people here and there ask about drum shoes. So your go to brand, have you tried others or do you just you the tried and true style.

Adam- I’ve been rocking DB drum shoes for years, they’re my go to, and they’re really lightweight really durable they last. I have had pairs last me years even with all the touring. A guy named jerry at DB he is an awesome cat. I always prefer to play esp. on tour to play in different shoes than what I wear every day, because you feel disgusted after if you were to stay in the same shoes after a show. It’s a necessity, their almost like an equivalent to a water shoe, very flexible lightweight. I have had people call them ballerina shoes. but I like the dexterity, and they are tight. They are my go to, and I have been wearing them for… going on ten years now at least ten years. They’ve been around for a while, you don’t seem them too much but when you do you see many drummers wearing them. I know the dude from arch enemy wears them, Danny walker he uses them, I don’t want to say anyone who doesn’t you know but if you look at the roster it’s pretty stacked with great drummers. Yea Mike Hamilton, he’s another one, he was in deeds of flesh, but he’s in exhumed now. They’re definitely amazing shoes I’m not saying it because I’m endorsed, these shoes are the real deal.

Badger- so I was going to ask this yesterday, but I will put a spin on it. So who were you routing for to win the super bowl?

Adam-I was actually, I wasn’t in favor of any team. But I wanted to see Peyton go out with a win, Cam was a J.A. He was a baby about it

Badger- I listen to sports radio a lot, and they were saying that he was one of the biggest guys on the field and he recoiled away from the fumble. How does that happen when you are the largest guy?

Adam- oh I know, he regretted that one. His passing was off, they just didn’t look like a SB team.

Badger- some moments were painful to watch, If Peyton does retire it’s on a high note, and he didn’t want to say for sure.

Adam- yea but he did say what type of beer he was going to have after. Hahaha I actually just got myself a six pack of Hopslam from Bells Beer. That stuff’s good you can only get one sixer at a time so, and at like 20 something a six pack, I mean you got me that Heady Topper so you know your beers if you’ve never had that? Do you get bells there?

Badger- sometimes I have to go to mass to get some beers. Like the iron maiden beer I can’t get it in NH but I can head down to the mass border and get some.  I have had some brown note from KY, (this is when I explain the brown note from the league) so the front of the can is hilarious it’s a brown ale but it is absolutely great. I’ll send you the picture. Another good one was a brewery in RI, if you guys come up my way I will have to get you a growler of this stuff. It has a summer ale taste like blue moon or Sam summer but it tastes like it would be around 2% but it’s actually close to 12 % so when you drink a glass it hits you, and you don’t expect it to hit you as hard as it does because it tastes so damn light. The stuff is awesome!

Badger- so what are you listening to currently, CD iTunes vinyl?

Adam- well actually I was just listening to acid bath. Well new stuff or?

Badger- anything whatever you are listening to

Adam- I discovered porcupine tree a few years ago, and it was from reading Opeth’s Hall Of Fame entry in Decibel for Blackwater Park, they mentioned Steven Wilson, and I was like I remember that guy, then I remember he did that project Storm Corrosion thing with Mikael Akerfeldt, and Steven Wilson, and it’s just like very eerily serene at times and I guess you could say like kind of post rock meets Shoegaze which is one of the weirder genres. But yea a lot of porcupine tree and S. Wilson, and something I have been listening to that just terrifies me but it’s so damn good is a band called Dødheimsgard  from Norway.

Badger- yea you were talking about them after the Worcester show,

Adam- oh yea I was they are still just so good their newest album is called like umbra omega. It’s just nasty, it is real nasty. I also have been going back on the classics that I used to listen to all the time like older Monstrosity, actually this morning I was listening to Demolition Hammer, a bit more thrash, but it has Alex Marquez, he played with Malevolent Creation on retribution but let’s see what else, newest faith no more album is good, new baroness.

Badger- that is good, I have to get it on vinyl, because I was being a bit picky about vinyl so I wanted to wait to hear it first but it is definitely vinyl worthy

Adam- yea it is I bought it on vinyl they played in Baltimore I saw them and when they toured they were sold out every show, I saw them in Baltimore and it was amazing absolutely amazing. So yea that’s what I have been listening to lately.

Badger- Awesome well it sounds like 2016 will be a great year for you, and the bands you are a part of, for me it’s a great year because that just means there’s some great metal happening, and I am really pumped to hear God Enslavement.

Thank you for your time, and stay brutal my friend.

Adam, – Alright dude, thanks again. Cheers.

Hothfest 2016 lineup and interview with Jamie

Hothfest- 2016

Maximum Capacity Chicopee, MA 01013

01/09/2016-01/10/2016

Metal Festivals happen every year all over the world, these festivals are one of the greatest shows metal heads end up going to. Getting a chance to see metal bands from all over at the same venue, be it an open air stadium, or other concert halls. Many metal heads like myself have great memories from going to big festivals, hearing and seeing bands we are stoked to see, to discovering bands that we had never heard before. In the Northeast U.S. there is really only one big festival that has been happening annually since 1999. But that is just not enough to satisfy the appetite of metal heads across the region. This is when a drummer and tattoo artist from the Massachusetts area decided he had waited long enough, and was going to take matters into his own hands. Jamie Cross came up with Hothfest last year and is doing it again this year around. Hothfest -2016 we will be witnessing 30 bands over the course of two days. To make things even better its on a weekend, Saturday and Sunday, that means for most you wont have to miss work to go to an awesome metal show.

I had the chance to talk to Jamie and ask him a few questions about Hothfest 2016 to get an idea,  what started it all, and what to expect.

Badger- So this is the second annual Hothfest, have you already noticed more exposure of this festival than when you did it last year?

Jamie- A little bit, I mean I’m trying a bit harder, I went to other shows and have been passing out postcards to everybody. Of course there’s Facebook and doing the old school thing driving around and putting up flyers but I’m just hoping for the best. It should be good

Badger- Yea I think so, and what prompted you to organize a metal festival in the first place?

Jamie- When I did it last year I kind of did it just for fun and it turned out pretty good, and then I had bands from across the states offering to play so, I mean I probably had one hundred bands offer to play this year so I had to pick and choose but yea it’s awesome.

Badger- That’s cool, that very promising now I am looking forward to 2017 already hearing that.

Jamie- I know right me too, I can’t wait

Badger- So what has the general reaction been from the bands last year? Were you like reaching out to bands last year, and this year they are coming to you to do it?

Jamie- Yea I reached out to a couple that played last year and they did well, and a lot were friends of bands so I had people say “ you gotta check out this band,” so I got a lot of that and bands started hitting me up offering to play, offering to get on it.

Badger- Now here is a metal festival with  a lot of bands playing,  do you have any sponsors for this? Or is it all you?

Jamie- No I do it all myself man,

Badger- That’s pretty cool, good for you man that’s awesome.

Jamie- Yea I just put like the music stores and logo on our artwork because they were letting me hang stuff up there to help out.

Badger- Now do you have any times for what time the doors open and what time it’s going to run till on Saturday, and then the same for Sunday?

Jamie- Yea I am not positive on that last year doors opened at noon, and bands started at 1. So I’m assuming the same, I haven’t figured out the times yet, I have a few other shows going on right now also that I am working on.

Badger- What other shows do you have going on?

Jamie- Well this Saturday I have what’s called jingle jam, it’s a toys for tots thing with 9 bands on that, it’s a metal show all ages two bucks bring a toy. It’s called jingle jam and there is a Facebook page for that too. I got a couple of tribute bands on that and some locals playing.

Badger- Any shows besides that one?

Jamie-Then after that, the next one is actually after Hothfest and its January 23rd and called musical masterpiece theater the art of the guitar edition. It’s going to be a metal show for the sickest guitar players. I have Mark Rizzo from Soulfly headlining, and then I have Dave Sharp and the Solar Power, a few other ones are going to be on that, and I am still waiting to hear back from them.

Badger-So I know, I can’t remember where the venue was originally going to be, but was it a case of so many bands and people showing interest that caused the venue change?

Jamie- No actually something had happened and they switched owners so I am actually having shows there now. I had already moved it so we are going to keep it where it is (Maximum Capacity) I know the guy that owns it now so and they own both venues so I will be throwing shows at both venues. Yea I have a big summer show I throw that has about 30 bands called rocking on the river and it’s my birthday bash, and we have that at the waterfront. So I already booked that again this year.

Jamie-That one’s kind of like Hothfest but the summer instead. I do about four or five big shows a year, when bands play every weekend people sometimes don’t want to show up. So (with a big show they are more likely to show up)

Badger- yea I know my old band we would play the same club almost every weekend because we were tight with the owner. But we knew that some people didnt want to come and see us every Friday or Saturday, it is what it is, and you always have the group that wouldn’t miss a show for the world.

Jamie- We have our first show in NH playing at the Shaskeen pub in Manchester. It’s January 2nd and I am pretty psyched because we haven’t played anywhere else except from around here so it should be fun.

Jamie- We sound like COC and Pantera that who we get compared to all the time, two of my favorite bands so I will take that. We are half rock half metal so.

Badger-Are there any updates you want the readers and local to know about this show? Your band? What you are putting into this, other stuff about you? I know you do tattoos so…?

Jamie-Yea I own a tattoo studio, I do some work for bands cd artwork, t-shirt all that stuff. At the shows the background for Hothfest that’s one of my paintings I did I actually just got the posters in for Hothfest, so I will be driving around and hanging wherever places will let me.

Bader- I know you had just done a painting event,

Jamie-Yea called who wants to paint with me. We had a blast, it was a lot of fun.

Badger-Is that something you think you will be doing more of?

Jamie-Yea every couple of months I am going to do it, this time around I am going g to limit it to around 25 people so I know and have them pay up front. We had a blast, listened to metal and local bands all night.

Jamie-If I could add one more thing the band Defeated Sanity will be here all the way from Germany they haven’t been in the states for about 5 years. So that’s going to be a pretty cool deal that they are playing at Hothfest and they are bringing a band called Iniquitous Savagery from Scotland with them so we have this whole European/ UK tour coming this way and also a band from California, and then metal bands from NH, MA, Vermont pretty much everywhere around here.

Jamie- Dehumanized will headline Saturday, and carnivore will headline Sunday

Jamie-Sunday is more of a local thing, and closer, and the travelling bands are playing on Saturday.

Badger-That’s pretty good planning, especially for like Defeated Sanity who are on tour. Thank you for setting up a sick metal festival, thanks for trying to keep the metal scene going around here, and thank you for the phone call.

Jamie- Cool thanks man.

So there you have it, I for one am looking forward to Hothfest 2016.

Lurid Memory- Dematerializing album review 8.5/10

Lurid Memory

Dematerializing

Aaron Ashby- Percussion
Floyd Winters-Bass guitars
Glen Davis- Lead Guitars
Oscar Padilla- Guitars and Vocals

zLurid Memory Promo

  1. Whispers in the Dark

Sounds of whispering voices fade in slowly, with the sound of a clock tower chiming, and then the guitars come in with a driving riff, and the second guitar playing just a few moments of the riff adding as accents. The vocals let out a growl and the whole band is in it at this point. It has a solid groove made up of some blackened death metal progression. I like the way they utilize whispering vocals at certain points. The guitar solo around the 1:45 minute mark is a melodic guitar solo layered over blast beats.   With an Allegro tempo this song keeps things moving quickly within the rhythm and really locks down a groove you can head bang to. The last thirty seconds of the song plays out with a heavy rhythm and a guitar solo with some concert hall echo going on.

  1. Fantasy of the Terminal Moment

I like the way they start the song off with a riff panned to the right and a guitar riff panned to the left for a few bars building up to the first verse. The vocals slightly remind me of Aborted in the sound of the vocal delivery. The sound is crisp and tight, I like the seamless change to an amped up section at the 1:41 minute mark giving you that energetic style provoking you to really get moving. This song has an infectious groove to it, and requires you to hit the repeat button. Make it to the 3:00 mark and they take it to the next level with heavy bass appearance, and a melodic feel, only to gift the listener with a guitar solo sequence and rolling double bass for that concrete layer. This song has quite a few changes, each one is awesome. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this song.

  1. Pangea

The guitars playout acoustically with the sound of wind and solitary isolation set up another acoustic riff rolling along at a nice pace building and growing. This is an instrumental track, but man is it badass. It’s simple, however it’s like something you would have heard from an early Opeth album. Solid acoustic instrumental contribution.

  1. I Too……

A driving guitar riff and intermittent bass build up to the first verse, of double bass rolling rhythm and a solid driving riff. Right at the :40 second mark we hear the first awesome change I love this style of metal, as they are progressing along, and delivering some blackened death metal with ferocity. All the while building songs up and then delivering a serene melodic section sometimes filled with acoustic guitars, followed by an electric guitar solo. This song may be my favorite track on the album, however at the rate these songs have been impressing me, and it’s too early since there is one track left to listen to.

  1. Dematerialized

The song fades in at a decent pace and we hear the band giving us some impressive playing abilities. I can’t say it enough, the changes that occur, always turn out to be just right. They go from one badass section in the song to the next section that registers a notch above on my badassometer. I can honestly see this band being able to pull of thirteen minute long songs like Opeth used to, and having every section be impressive. It’s apparent that all members are very talented at their instruments.

Since this was the first time I have even heard Lurid Memory, I can tell you I am impressed and therefore I am a fan now. I did not know what I was getting into when I hit the play button, but it’s good. It is really good, they are like a blackened progressive death metal band. The vocals remind me of Sven from Aborted at times, and their musical stylings bring back memories of Opeth’s “ My Arms your Hearse” album, as it is equal parts grueling metal, and melodic progressive metal. For fans of Cynic, Gorguts, Death, Morbid Angel and Opeth. This five song EP is worth the buy, and is easily a solid 8.5/10. They have a solid sound, every change being impressive, all members showcasing their talent, and the sound quality is great.

Here’s a little youtube clip for the song “I Too….”

Escarnium- Godless Shrine Of Decay Album Review 8/10

Escarnium

Godless Shrine of Decay

VICTOR ELIAN – Vocals Guitars
VITOR GIOVANNI – Bass/ Vocals
NESTOR CARRERA – Drums

  1. Radioactive Doom

This song goes into blast beats and death metal right away with a growl from the vocals. This is some heavy hitting stuff right here, I like it, they really capture the brutally heavy death metal with a section of some low and slow rhythm with a guitar solo coming out of it. The song goes right back to the blast beats and heavy hitting brutal beat for the last few bars of the song.

  1. Genocide Ritual

This song is heavy from the very moment it begins, with a cool guitar riff that sets up a groove. You can really get into this song, it has some old school flavor to it and crushes with its heavy hitting rhythm. At about three minutes long the song is pretty straight to the point without any filler. Its heavy, has a groove, and keeps it going until the very end.

  1. Human Waste

This song has a little drum beat to start the song off, and then a few bars of double bass and guitars they set things up for the vocals. The song picks up in tempo for the first verse, really giving an old school death metal feel. I dig it, it has a groove and isn’t trying to be over technical or fancy. Just old school heavy death metal from start to finish.

  1. Excruciating Existence

This song starts with a quick little drum roll out and goes right into a low growl and heavy buzz saw guitar distortion with a cool groove. The old school death metal sound is great, they aren’t trying to do the popular thing of the week here. They seem to want to play old school death metal.

  1. Salvation Through Zyklon B

This song starts out with some noise/ static and then guitars fade in, the drums roll out right into blast beats and the vocals start growling away. This has a great tempo, and groove about it, making this song very easy to head bang into. I am enjoying the drum and bass solo around the 1:22 mark. This is another solid old school death metal song for fans of Suffocation, and Incantation.

  1. Nuclear Burial

This song fades into a guitar riff that has that classic distortion sound, and the drums playing exactly how you would be expecting. The song really grooves, and they take it to another level right around the 2:09 minute mark with a bass solo and then a pit destroying section that lasts just shy of sixty seconds and then goes into a guitar solo. This is a rock solid track and may be a fan favorite.

  1. Self Proclaimed Messiah

This song starts out with a 1.2.3.4 on the drums and then the rest of the band joins in with a thick chugging style rhythm. This is a low and slow chugging train of death metal. That is up until the 1:30 mark when they pick up the pace and play some power chords and blast beats during the verses. Around the 3:20 minute mark the guitars kill it with a guitar solo that is simply stated classic. It has a classic death metal sound, and further adds to the enjoyment of this song and its old school sound. The last minute of this song is absolutely decimating, and filled with a groove you can get into before it ends.

  1. 731

A sound clip of someone speaking at a podium for about eight seconds opens this song up for the band in which they come in full throttle without wasting anytime getting into some brutal death grooves. This song is awesome, they hit this one out of the park. It has a solid beat, a quick tempo, and a groove from the moment they begin to play.

  1. Death Metal Terror

I like how this song starts out, it builds up for a few bars and goes into a blast beat filled section to kick off the first verse. The verse is solid mid-tempo and lasts only a few bars before going into a chorus section riddled with blasts. Around the 2:00 minute mark the song takes things to the next level with the chugging riff really locking down a groove and is absolutely perfect to head bang and move to. I know I am not through the album yet, but this may be my personal favorite track. If you haven’t heard Escarnium and you want to sample them with one song, I would pick this. You know exactly what you are getting yourself into, and it is a great listen.

  1. Covered in Decadence

This starts out with some vocals and a quick set up of blasts and the guitar playing some chords for a few bars, but take it down in tempo to give it that punching heavy death roll and sets up the first verse. I like the backing vocals on this track as they seem to shadow the main vocals, giving the song some depth vocally. The band really delivers great sound from the guitars, not many are playing the old school death metal like this these days, and Escarnium are doing it right.

  1. Rex Verminorum

This song has a slower start with a nice introduction from the band just jamming out some death metal for just shy of one minute and then rolls right into a quicker tempo and some blasting metal. This song is just a solid rolling death metal song that is to the point and rocks a solid groove.

  1. Dark Clouds Of Hells Fire

This song starts out with a 1234 on the kick and muted cymbal followed by a real mean guitar riff. The sound of the ride, where the quarter notes pinging on the bell of the ride. This is like going back to the early nineties death metal scene when the sound was blunt and fierce. The music had a take no prisoners attitude, and the sound was crisp with buzz saw distortion to the guitars. The rhythm was concrete and everyone listening would be head banging at the same time. This song is a perfect example of that, and they really pull it off.

  1. Slaves of an Ending Fate

A cool little drum intro kicks things off for a relentless guitar riff that plays out during the first verse and lasts just shy of a minute. They slow things down a bit at the 1:38 mark and brings it down to a slow churn with haunting sound from the guitar and vocals. They start to bring the song back up with the next section of the song, then further builds to the original tempo with a hearty amount of double bass and also blast beats, with the guitar riff we witnessed at the beginning of the track.

  1. His Final March

The song starts out with sounds clip of a man speaking in a foreign language, and then a layer of pure evil vocals speaking what would sound like ritualistic chanting from a demon. The band fires up with a driving guitar riff and drums going from a quick set up to some rapid blasting death metal. The first verse follows a guitar riff that delivers a groove along with the classic death metal distortion sound. This is yet another song really rocking the old school death metal sound and really being able to pull it off effortlessly with grace.

  1. Enfeeblement nd Iconoclasm

With this many tracks sometimes I like to leave one a mystery, this is that track and all I will tell you, is that it is fucking awesome.

  1. Bonus- Covered In Decadence DEMO

This is the demo version of the tenth track on this album, and it shows the listeners what they are bringing to the table as a demo version, you will be surprised because the sound quality is great. This really showcases the diligence of this band and how far they are going with things before it becomes a final product.

These guys come in to play death metal and that’s what they do. They aren’t trying to re-invent the wheel, they want to play brutal old school death metal, locking down a groove that so many bands aren’t doing these days and really keeping things simple. From the first track to the last they deliver soul crushing brutal old school death metal like a well-oiled machine firing on all cylinders and hammering out a punishment without any hang-ups. This album is rock solid and is easily 8/10, fans of old school death metal will thoroughly enjoy this album.

Solium Fatalis- The Undying Season – album review

Solium Fatalis

The Undying Season

sf2

2015

Jeff DeMarco-Vocals
Jim Gregory-Guitars
Ehren Hill-Guitars
Olivier Pinard-Bass
Flo Mounier-Drums

  1. To Deliver Us All

The album begins with this great inaugural track, the sound sample that eerily starts things off is like something out of an old horror movie. The band fades in right to an explosion of drums guitars and growling vocals. The song has a great rhythm, some mean verses, and the guitar solo around the halfway point is impressive. The song is blunt, no fluff, just straight up metal.

  1. Salient

This song has a cool perpetual guitar riff that begins the track, and a rhythm that delivers a indisputable groove. It has a bit of a slower feel for the majority of the song, but sinks its hooks right in you almost immediately. It just rocks the shit out of that groove for so long and then gifts we with some fast paced blasting towards the end of the song and one last line from the vocals.

  1. Monolith Of Internecion

A quick drum introduction opens the doors for a really cool rhythm and malevolent melody. The first verse begins with a hail of blast beats, and a driving guitar riff. The chorus is captivating and the guitar riff during the chorus builds up to the post chorus solo. This song is so concise and catchy you will find yourself moving, or head banging to the song involuntarily, and hoping for more.

  1. An Asylum For Penitence

At first we hear an admirable melodic guitar intro that sets things up for the door to be kicked in with a heavy hitting rhythm and menacing vocals. I am really digging this song, the beginning was such a harmonious melody, and then the band joins in. My first reaction was to clap and throw up the metal horns. These guys took me by surprise with this one, and it’s only a third of the way through. This song is like walking through several mysterious doors to end up in the same spot you were in before. Each door is a subtle change and then goes right back to the infectious melodic groove. I fight the urge to say this is my album favorite because it’s just too early to say, but damn is this a solid song that will cause listeners to have that “Fuck yeah” moment. I undeniably listened to this song again due to it being such a good tune.

  1. Corporeal Form

Damn they do not waste any time with this song, growls and ripping drums right out of the gate. I like the guitar riff that plays before the first verse, it sets the verse up well. It has a solid tempo and delivers a satisfying groove leading up to a solo around the mid-point of the song. I really like the tail end of the solo and how it comes out and begins the transition for the last verse of the song. The song ends with a cool subtle guitar riff that fades the song out.

  1. Contagion

Heavy buzz saw distortion and a mean riff begin this song for a few bars and then we get hit with some blast beats from Flo setting things up for the first verse. It has a great tempo, and I can’t stress enough this group really lays down a groove for the listener. There are plenty of bands not just metal that do not build the song structure with a groove. I find these guys make sure to give the listener something to get locked into, something to head bang to, to move to. This song in particular easily encourages the listener to break out the air drums, or air guitar. True to the name of this song, it is contagious from the very first note.

  1. Paths To Obliteration

This song rips right into you with its beginning rhythm, the first verse is solid and straight to the point going back into that killer rhythm again. The song is exactly what you would expect from the title of it. There is nothing more enjoyable than a metal song that seems to get right down to a perfect execution and is unwavering in its brutality. This song is 3:09 minutes of precision melodic death metal.

  1. Corruptor

This song begins with a pleasant melody and a grand rhythm, short and simple verses, and I must say the changes that we see throughout this song leave the listener looking forward to what’s next. This song has a solid groove and has absolutely no fillers. It is straight to the point death metal that leaves you wanting more.

  1. The Undying Season

The title track is here and leaves nothing to chance with this one. Great guitar riff right from the beginning really lays down that groove I have been talking about. The first verse is solid and comes out of it with some really menacing blast beats and guitar shredding. The song just keeps raising the bar after every section, not to mention the whirlwind of a guitar solo around the 2:15 minute mark. This song has so much to offer, and really does a great job maintaining that groove you can follow and enjoy.

All in all this is one of those moments when you hear something for the first time and it blows you away your expectations. The sound quality is great, and there wasn’t one single song that I felt like I wanted to skip and see what’s next. This is a solid melodic death metal album that I can see many enjoying and moving to that contagious groove Solium Fatalis delivered in pretty much every song.  By the sounds of it this album was written for most every metal fan looking for something heavy and melodic to enjoy any time and anywhere. I found myself really enjoying every song and every transition. I give this album an 9/10, and highly suggest readers to check this band out and buy the album. The good news is by the looks of things, if you are like me and are wanting some more, they not only have an earlier album on their bandcamp page. But they are rumored to be working on new material.

To give you a little taste of Solium Fatalis  here is a playthrough video of Jim Gregory playing the guitar for ” Monolith of Internecion”

Haunted Cellar – Infernal Delusions Review

Haunted cellar : INFERNAL DELUSIONS

Haunted Cellar is:

Khodor Nashar – Lead Guitar & Backing Vocals.
Rodi Mestrih- Drums & Percussion.
Walid Sandakly – Lead Vocals.
Aboud Kabbas – Bass Guitar.

1: The Divinity of Loneliness

The song starts out with a wholesome and melodic, guitar rhythm being played for about 18 seconds until the distorted guitars and drums jump in. This has a mid tempo feel to it, for a few bars, and then as the drums stop playing, the guitars give us a riff that builds up to the first verse. The vocals for the verse are a low almost guttural sound to them. The recording quality is not the greatest. I am really enjoying this tempo and when the chorus approaches, I am noticing that it is catchy as hell. I could easily find myself humming, whistling, or singing along. After the chorus the song slows down, to give it a more punchy attack. The guitar solo is a simple yet tasteful addition to the song. When the other guitar comes in the harmonics of this section are cool. This song is a good tune, I have enjoyed it during my time listening.

2:The Way of the Swarm

This song starts out with a 1-2 cymbal splash and then a cymbal crash beginning the slow and stringent rhythm. The song goes through a few changes in the drum patterns before the verse begins. This song has a slower feel for the most part until the first verse lets loose. Going into the next verse, it has the same structure, until right out of the second verse. The song slows down to give you a slower punchy feel, more than how the song began. Right around the half-way point, the song takes on a change that is actually the highlight of the song in my opinion. I like the double bass and driving beat it has to it. The vocals are a little higher and tighter. At 3:28 seconds the song transitions back in to the feel and pattern that made up the first verse. It then picks up into a death metal rhythm with a blast beat laden breakdown. This carries on for a solid minute until it slows and abruptly stops.

3 Path to Oblivion

This song has what sounds like a really gritty distortion on the guitars. A riff that sounds like it is going to fade out for only a brief moment until it comes right back in and plays a fluid, mid tempo riff. The vocals join in and it takes on an old school death metal feel. We get hit by a bar of blast beats then winds down to the guitar solo. Not a bad song by any means, but this is the one song that started to lose me.

4: Haunted Cellar

This song has a darker approach to it, with a cool guitar riff in the background then vacates to open up for a solid driving guitar riff, mid tempo drums, and a nice feel to it. The vocals are low and grim sounding. This song maintains the sludgy death metal feel and mid tempo pace for the entire song. Not bad, maybe not the best track they have in my opinion.

These guys have some serious potential and it sounds like they recorded this themselves. One thing I do want to point out is that this band is from Syria. This is not a band on U.S soil where there are tons of places and studios to do recording mixing and mastering. In fact I was only able to find one studio. So take that into consideration when you listen to these guys. Metal may not be the most accepted art form over there, and the resources are not easy to come by either. Especially when it comes to metal band recording studios. If these guys had a chance with more of a variety of studios these songs may sound different. I think they sound pretty damn good considering. They are fresh and have plenty to offer, if this is just a debut of their sound. We could definitely see some serious metal coming from these guys in the future. I personally cant wait to hear more from these guys and see what they have up their sleeves.

Hate Eternal : Infernus album review

This is a little album review I have done for the folks over at The Metal Syndicate

check it out

1: Locust Swarm

This track starts out with a solid death metal riff and blast beats. Great verse that has a good tempo, something you can move to.  A short guitar solo back in to the verse with lots of blast beats during the majority of the song. Vocals are on point, precise and clear. I am enjoying this track up to the chorus, a great track to listen to. Now the break down begins, it slows down; and has a punchy feel with some drum rollouts. The song continuously slows down in tempo giving it a brutal effect.  The song ends with a note ringing out from the guitar.

2: The Stygian Deep

As the song fades in it has a slower feel to it but only for about 30 seconds. That’s when things pick up, with the verse and the blast beats kick in hard. I do enjoy when the bass of a metal band can be heard and not drowned out. When we reach the chorus the vocal pattern mixes with the guitar riffs. Think of it here as a complimenting symbiosis if you will as they are not trying to experiment with anything. They seem to want to make death metal the way they want to do it with no outside influences. Straight up death metal…no chaser.

3: Pathogenic Apathy

This one has a nice little drum intro to start the song off, no fading in, no guitar riff; just a one bar drum intro. As the guitars come in, the song takes on a mid tempo feel.  Even when the verse begins, vocals come in and blast beats begin. Same feel to it and it maintains that same tempo; the few changes they make don’t seem to change the tempo so far. This is another song you can move to, be it head-banging or moshing. Pretty much whatever turns your crank… or wrecks it. The chorus has a loving feel to it as it has a menacing experience to it, I love that guitar riff. Three songs in and this album has yet to lose my interest. They don’t seem to be stepping out of their comfort zone by focusing on keeping the pace and the brutal feel to it.  This is a solid track, I like it.

4: La Tempestad

Instant blast beats with mean riffing to start off. When the vocals come in they are relentless. This is a song that will be cool to hear live. This is a driving, no holds barred death metal song that willing to cut down everything in its path. I like it; no frills, nothing flashy. This is just a killer track that cuts to the bone. This is one of those songs containing 100% intensity till the very end.

5: Infernus

The title track starts out with a guitar riff as well as some spoken dialogue. It actually reminds me of Johan Hegg from Amon Amarth. However the beginning is a bit drawn out for my liking. When the metal vocals do come in; they are joined by a heavier riff from the guitar and a slower paced vibe that somehow still remains brutal.  Right around the half-way point we witness a change of direction. We have nice little section of guitar riffing paired with drumming adding fills on every other bar.  As if this song wasn’t already a decent tune it then reaches a whole other level during the second half. This song is so bad-ass I find myself being violated by the repeat button. I wish the whole song was like this… brutal and more brutal.

6: The Chosen One

The addition of Chason on drums was a great choice. The way this song starts out has so much intensity, energetic and yet it is precise with no hint of any sloppiness. This may be the only track I don’t care for the vocals as much. This song really brings back that old school Florida death metal feel. But I just don’t care for the vocals on this track.

7: Zealot, Crusader of War

The song starts out with some double bass rolling and a guitar riff; mid-tempo but not too fast or slow and chuggy. By the time the vocals come in the blast beats begin. The song is not bad, it just doesn’t really keep my attention. The chorus is rather enjoyable with mid section guitar riff at the half way mark is a nice classic solo. The change at the 2:50 minute mark takes on a different feel that I do not really care for. From that point on the song goes downhill.

8: Order of The Arcane Scripture

This has a riff I can get into right away. The drums I can get in to also. The vocals are better on this track (so far). This album really brings back that Florida death metal feel, in many ways this album is enjoyable because of that. Hate Eternal was not conforming to the industry standards for this albums sound and style. They seem to be just doing what they know how to do. Make relentless metal for sport.

 9: Chaos Theory

A quite unexpected start to this track as it doesn’t have that typical death metal feel, the groove is different. One minute into the song and no vocals; quick tempo for this song keeps it interesting. This seems to be an instrumental track and an impressive one at that. This is not a melodic “let’s mellow out for a moment” track. What we call a solid fast paced metal instrumental bliss. I am still tremendously enjoying this song as it ends well. The last hit on the bell of a cymbal was the icing on the cake if you will.

10: O’Majestic Being, Hear My Call

This song starts out with a cool effect. A talk box for the guitars or a pedal effect, either way they start this song off oddly for the first thirty seconds… that is until the drums come in with a short fill to hit us with a blast beats. The guitar riff that is playing is nothing intricate as it just flows well to a not so mind blowing capacity. When the guitar solo happens I feel as though the song changes for the better. It seems like it will finish up strong. Maybe not as strong as I expected but the second half of the song is still pretty solid and makes up for it.

After listening to the cd, I can honestly say I have never been a huge fan of theirs nor have owned anything by them. I never thought they were that bad, just Hate Eternal is not my style of preference. I expected to listen to this and feel un-moved. From the day they released a track to stream, I wasn’t blown away. But, I must admit this album grew on me a little and for the better now that I’ve had the chance to get in a few more listens.
Mind blowing? No, but a solid no frills death metal album yes.
